You can now legally run a 6-INCH LIFT AND 37s on a Chevy Silverado 1500 in Australia.

Offroad Industries has released new federally approved pre-rego packages for the Silverado 1500, with options ranging from 4-inch lifts and 35s right through to a 6-inch BDS lift and 37-inch tyres.

So if you’re buying a new Silverado and want to build it BIG while keeping it legal, there’s now a pathway to do it.

Does a GVM upgrade mean you can tow more?

Not necessarily. This is one of the misconceptions we hear all the time when it comes to GVM upgrades.

GVM, GCM and braked towing capacity are three separate limits, and increasing one doesn't automatically increase the others.

A GVM upgrade increases the maximum legalweight of your 4WD, giving you more capacity for passengers, accessories and tow ball weight.

But it doesn't automatically mean you can tow a heavier caravan or trailer.

However, there are exceptions!

Lovells offers separately approved Braked Towing Capacity (BTC) upgrades for selected vehicles, including certain Ford Rangers and Toyota LandCruisers, which can increase towing capacity from 3,500kg to 4,000kg.

These upgrades must be paired with an eligible Lovells GVM upgrade and are subject to specific vehicle, kit and compliance requirements. If you've already got a Lovells GVM upgrade, we can check whether your vehicle is eligible for one of their BTC upgrades.

Our job isn’t to find the most expensive version of everything we can sell you. It’s to understand what you actually need the vehicle to do, then recommend the parts and upgrades that make sense for your build.

Got a GVM question? Drop it below and we might cover it in the next one.

GVM upgrades can get confusing quickly because the answer often depends on your vehicle, the approved GVM upgrade and how your 4WD is set up.

Here are three common GVM upgrade questions we hear from 4WD owners:

1. Does tow ball weight count towards GVM and axle loads? — TRUE

When you put a caravan/trailer/boat on the back of your 4WD, the tow ball mass is being carried by the vehicle. That weight eats into to your vehicle’s GVM and rear axle loads.

2. Are all GVM upgrades basically the same? — FALSE

Different GVM upgrades can have different approved GVMs, axle load capacities, suspension components, lift heights and tyre sizes. Two upgrades available for the same 4WD won’t necessarily give you the same outcome.

3. Do I need to upgrade my wheels and tyres with a GVM upgrade? — FALSE

Not necessarily. It depends on the particular GVM upgrade and whether the factory wheels and tyres have sufficient load ratings for that configuration.

There isn’t always a simple yes-or-no answer when it comes to GVM upgrades.

The right GVM upgrade depends on your vehicle, what you’re carrying, if you’re towing and how you actually use your 4WD.

Save this for the next time GVM, GCM and towing weights start doing your head in.

If you own a 4WD, tow a caravan or are planning a GVM upgrade, there are three acronyms you need to understand:

GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass)
The maximum your vehicle itself is allowed to weigh when loaded. That includes the vehicle, fuel, passengers, accessories, gear and the tow ball weight being carried by the vehicle.

GCM (Gross Combination Mass)
The maximum permitted combined mass of your loaded vehicle and trailer. This is where towing calculations can get more complicated, because you need to consider what the vehicle and trailer weigh together while still remaining within their individual limits.

BTC (Braked Towing Capacity)
The maximum braked trailer mass the vehicle is rated to tow. If your vehicle has a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, that doesn’t automatically mean you can load the vehicle to its maximum GVM and put a 3,500kg caravan behind it.

That’s why looking at just one number can get you into trouble.

Your GVM, GCM and braked towing capacity are separate limits, but they all need to work together when you’re calculating the weight of a loaded 4WD and caravan.

And remember: the limits are different from vehicle to vehicle. Always check the specifications and approvals that apply to your particular 4WD and towing setup.

What do you reckon - is the LandCruiser losing its hold on the market?

It feels weird even saying it considering how many LandCruisers we’ve built over the years, but we’re simply not seeing as many newer Toyotas coming through the workshop anymore.

The older Cruisers? Absolutely. But when it comes to new vehicles, the market seems to be shifting.

Maybe Toyota comes back swinging. Maybe the LandCruiser will always be king. Or maybe we’re watching the start of a genuine changing of the guard.

The clever part of this Ranger Raptor GVM upgrade is what it DOESN’T replace.

The factory FOX Live Valve shocks are a big part of what makes the Raptor drive the way it does, so Lovells engineered its GVM upgrade around retaining them.

Instead of replacing the complete suspension setup, the Lovells Fusion GVM upgrade uses rated coils with the factory electronically controlled FOX shocks to give the Raptor the additional load-carrying capacity it needs.

More payload, while retaining one of the best bits of the Raptor.

What’s the worst wiring you’ve found on a 4WD?

Good 12V wiring isn’t just about making something work.

Unprotected and unsecured wiring can rub through, run across hot or moving components and eventually cause some pretty serious problems.

We see this more often than you’d think.

6-inch lift. 37s. Street legal in Australia.

Understandably, the first question we normally get is: how?

This isn’t just an American lift kit that’s been bolted onto an F-150. The Offroad Industries 4x4 Stage 6 GVM upgrade has gone through the engineering, testing and federal approval process required to be certified under Second Stage Manufacture (SSM).

That process is what allows a new F-150 to be fitted with a 6-inch BDS suspension setup and 37-inch tyres pre-rego as part of an approved package. Increasing the GVM to 3700kg.

It’s currently the biggest federally approved lift on an F-150 we offer at BAW - and it’s a pretty wild example of what’s possible when the engineering and approval is done properly.
