KIAMA TO TATHRA - DAY 21 - 14 July 2026

Took the coastal Highway out of Kiama that quickly became diary country. Our first stop point was Tilba Cheese factory. But the entire village of Central Tilba had the quaintest buildings. The National Heritage listed village has the history of each building displayed. From hotel, bakery, cheese factory, lolly shop and artisan gift shops, it was like stepping back in time.

We then travelled to Hads old stomping ground of Tahtra. With dinner at the Tathra Hotel which has been charmingly renovated and now produce their own beer, Humpback Brewery.

The facilities at NRMA Tathra Beachside Caravan Park are exceptional. The family rooms are a complete bathroom, complete with a full sized bath. And the camp kitchen has a communal fire pit and cosy wood fired heater.

I’m definitely the wrong person to get reversing advice from.

NEWCASTLE TO KIAMA- DAY 20 - 13 July 2026

We left Stockton Beach this morning to head to Kiama. We planned to stop st Bald Hill at Stanwell Park to watch the hang gliders, but today was not our lucky day. There were no hang gliders.

We then journeyed over the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge. The bridge was as amazing, the views were stunning and some of the houses built on the cliff face were spectacular.

After a quick set up in Kiama we jetted off to the Blowhole (the world’s largest) but again, no luck. The ocean was calm and without swells. So no action there either.

A rapid exit to see the Cathedral Rocks at sunset but we followed our navigation maps that took us to the Rocks but not close enough to set up close.

NEWCASTLE - DAY 19- 12 July 2026

This morning we visited Fort Scratchley, a historic coastal fort built in 1882 to defend Newcastle and the coastline from naval attacks. Perched on the headland overlooking the harbour, it offers incredible panoramic views of the coastline and city. From the lookout, we could even see our caravan park across the water. The area is rich in defend history and currently has a RAAF base close by.

Next stop was the famous Harry's Café de Wheels, where we enjoyed some delicious “Tiger” pies that definitely lived up to the reputation. The cafe got its name in 1945 after council restricted permanent food vans. So wheels fitted and Harry moved his van 12 inches each day.

We said goodbye at the Newcastle airport to 3 of our young adults how, unfortunately for them, have to return to school and work. We know we are giving our children wonderful memories, building connections and a drive for exploring and adventure.

Back at camp, we finished the day with a walk along the breakwall, watching the sun set over the water whilst trying not to be blown into the water by the gusty winds.
