The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid range is expanding, with Toyota Australia announcing a new GXL 2WD Plug-in Hybrid for 2027.

Set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2027, the new mid-range grade will join the XSE 2WD, XSE AWD and GR Sport AWD Plug-in Hybrid models.

It will offer 201kW of combined power and up to 121km of EV-only driving range on the WLTP test cycle.¹ Pricing and further details will be announced closer to its arrival.

What does 48V actually mean on the HiLux?

Toyota calls it V-Active technology. It combines a 48V motor generator, lithium-ion battery and DC/DC converter with the HiLux 2.8L turbo-diesel engine.

The motor generator assists the engine when accelerating, while energy generated during deceleration is stored in the battery to be used again. It also helps make the engine stop-start system quicker, quieter and smoother.

What it doesn’t mean is that the HiLux is a Toyota Hybrid Electric vehicle or can drive on electric power alone. V-Active works alongside the diesel engine to help improve efficiency, response and everyday driving refinement.

So, the short version: same HiLux 2.8L turbo-diesel, with a little electrical assistance working in the background.
