🍻 THE TOWN WITH A SERIOUS PUB HISTORY 🍻

One pub for every 25 adults.
That was Deniliquin in 1868.

So while we’re not exactly suggesting Deni was built on beer, let’s just say the early locals certainly had options.

🍺 By 1868, Deniliquin had 11 hotels for a population of around 300 adults. By 1870, that number had climbed to 20, and between 1847 and 1878, there were 34 hotels licensed in town - although thankfully not all pouring at once.

But the story starts even earlier, with the Wanderer Inn.

Built in 1847, the Wanderer Inn is believed to have been Deniliquin’s first watering hole. It sat on top of a sandhill and, for a time, was the place to meet, eat, drink, talk stock, swap stories and no doubt hear a few yarns that got better every time they were told.

🤠 It even has a touch of bushranger-style legend attached to it. Story has it the infamous Captain Melville and his gang visited the Wanderer in 1851, staying for several hours before heading off after a rather unsuccessful attempt to pick the pockets of a boarder they were waiting on to fall asleep.

Classy? Not really.
Interesting local history? Absolutely.

But like many old country stories, the Wanderer’s ending was just as dramatic as its past.

🔥 On 25 July 1867, the hotel was destroyed by fire. The Pastoral Times later described it as “a monument to the past,” noting that other inns had sprung up and taken over much of its trade.

Then came the twist.

At a cost to build of 250 pounds and insured with two companies to the tune of 1150 pounds… the fire was questionable at best. It was later found to be foul play, and the person in charge that night was charged with arson.

Thankfully, Deni’s pub scene is much less dramatic these days.

🍽️ While there may not be 20 pubs pouring, there are still plenty around Deni where you can find a hearty feed, a cool ale and maybe even a tall tale or two.

🌿 WARING GARDENS: DENI’S LEAFY LITTLE PAUSE BUTTON 🌿

Some places don’t need much planning.

Just a coffee, a slow wander, a shady spot to sit for a while, and maybe a few ducks keeping you company.

Waring Gardens is exactly that.

Right in the heart of Deniliquin’s CBD, Waring Gardens has been part of the town since 1888 and is named after Deniliquin’s first Town Clerk, John Waring.

Originally established largely as a botanic garden, the area was used to test which trees and shrubs were best suited to Deniliquin’s climate and soil.

Very practical.
Very 1880s.
Very “let’s see what survives out here.”

And clearly, plenty did.

Today, Waring Gardens is one of Deni’s most loved green spaces, with established trees, shady lawns, walking paths, a lagoon system, birdlife, ducks, picnic spots and a fully fenced playground.

It’s one of those easy local stops that works for just about everyone.

☕ A quiet coffee on a bench.
🧺 A picnic under the trees.
🚶 A slow lap around the gardens.
🛝 A playground stop for the kids.
🍽️ A little wander before or after lunch in town.
🦆 A few ducks coming in for a quack chat.

But there’s more tucked into the gardens than just shade and lawn.

Nearby you’ll find the beautiful old St Paul’s Anglican Church, built in 1866 and later restored as part of the Multi-Arts Centre. With its heritage charm and garden surrounds, it’s one of those buildings you can’t help but stop and admire.

🎨 You’ll also find The Three Muses, representing Literature, Science and Art. Made in Italy from Sicilian marble, they once stood at the old School of Arts building before being moved to Waring Gardens in 1997.

So yes, Waring Gardens might be an easy picnic, playground or coffee stop, but it also has a few little pieces of Deni history hiding in plain sight.

Simple, free, pretty and right in town. Sometimes the best little outings are the ones that don’t need much effort at all.
