2023 Spring Nationals Wrap up
The Bend what can you say “first class facility”
Starting the weekend off with what can only be described as a completely untested car. following repairs to the 4-Link after The Red Centre Nats, Matt was unsure of how the car would react. Starting with a low 6 second pass with an early shutoff to test the new parachute location with early incrementals to run 5.8 second pass the team were off to a good start.
The weather conditions for Saturdays qualifying were trying to say the least, the Top Doorslammer Association making the decision to make the mid day test session qualifying session one as the wind and cold conditions were expected to worsen as the day went on.
With this in mind we kept a very similar tune up from Friday nights test pass, knowing that run would’ve been somewhere in the Low 90s to mid 80s. The car launched a little slower than expected with improved track conditions but still marching on to a 5.88 second pass.
With the loss of a few cars to the weather and track conditions qualifying had to be cut short for all categories, leaving T/D with only the one qualifying session.
Raceday began at an earlier time but with overcast conditions all morning the track was still cold. Round one matched the all coast hire 57 against Peter Kapiris in the Bat mobile “Saratoga” knowing what Petes team are capable of we couldn’t go in without improvement. The all coast hire 57 was expected to go into the low 80s or even into the high 70’s, we were no match for Kapiris running 5.79 to our improving 5.86.
Round 2 being the quickest loser of the previous round gave us a solo pass in an uneven field. Knowing we needed to run in at least in the top 4 of the round to have a chance at making the B final we looked to improve on the 5.86. Knocking the 60 foot time down was the main goal of the pass after both previous passes being in the 1.01-1.00 range. That goal was achieved with a 0.976 60 foot time, the car was on another 5.8 pass at 3.9 seconds the motor shut down and the car coasted to a 6.62, good enough to make the B final.
Going into the B final with a short turnaround and with no time to repair what turned out to be a damaged Liberty 5 speed gearbox our team new we were up against it facing off against Peter Kapiris again things didn’t look so good for the all coast hire 57. Launching in second gear and 5th gear failing to engage a rev limiting 6.115et was not going to be good enough against Pete’s 5.87 and we ended up in 4th place for the event.
As a team we couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished this weekend, This car hadn’t made a complete pass since the crash at the Western Nationals in March last season. There has been so many changes to the team and program in that time as-well as lots of hours in just repairing the car.
We can’t think our sponsors enough for the help to make this possible and bring on the rest of the 2023-2024 NDRC Doorslammer Championship.
