26 December 1971, spectator craft including a amphibious car (Amphicar) pictured on Sydney Harbour at the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

The Amphicar was a German vehicle manufactured 1960-1968. It was the first commercially produced amphibious car and used a Triumph Herald engine over the rear axle to power the wheels and twin propellers. In the water, the front wheels acted as rudders. The body was steel.

It only seems appropriate to take the Amphicar down and Captain this year‘s Elvis Festival. Highly recommended joining me again next year as there’s lots of fun and entertainment over five days of nothing but Elvis…

Congrats Rowan for completing the resto of the 1st Amphicar to arrive in Australia. We all know the tremendous effort that went into finishing this very significant historical vehicle. We can’t wait to see it on the Lake in Canberra and to have a swim with Ollie’s Burley Bath Tub and the Cooma Jinda special !
