Lenders have wasted no time responding to the cash rate lifting to 4.60%.

According to Canstar, 338 home loan products were repriced in just seven days.

Following four cash rate rises this year, Canstar estimates monthly mortgage repayments have increased by $364 on a $600,000 loan, $454 on a $750,000 loan and $606 on a $1 million loan.

If you’re feeling the pressure of higher mortgage repayments, here are some steps you can take to ease the strain:

* negotiate a lower rate with your current lender
* review your loan structure to see what changes could reduce your repayments
* compare lender rates and refinance to a lower rate
* use an offset account to reduce interest costs, where available
* review your household expenses to identify areas where spending can be cut

If repayments are becoming difficult to manage, contact your lender early about hardship assistance or call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 for free financial counselling. Acting early could help avoid missed repayments or defaults that will reflect on your credit file.

One of the biggest mistakes people can make when they're under financial pressure is waiting too long to deal with it.

Maybe the mortgage is taking a bigger slice of your pay. Maybe credit card balances are creeping up. Maybe you're starting to choose which bills get paid first.

You're not alone.

The cash rate is now 4.60%, its highest level since 2011, while annual inflation rose to 4.0% in August.

If repayments are becoming difficult, contact your lender or provider and ask about financial hardship assistance. They are required to consider hardship requests and may be able to offer a different repayment arrangement.

Free help is also available through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.

You don't need to have missed multiple repayments before asking for support. In fact, reaching out earlier can give you more room to work through the problem.

Cost-of-living pressures are becoming so severe they're even being linked to rising petrol theft.

New NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research analysis found a 1% higher level of living costs was associated with a 6% higher level of petrol theft over the medium term. The research also showed broader financial pressures, including higher mortgage repayments and changes in real wages, had a greater influence over time than petrol prices alone.

Financial pressure can make it harder to keep up with existing debts. If you're struggling, contact your lender or credit provider as early as possible to discuss your options rather than simply missing repayments.

If missed payments have already affected your credit history, reviewing your credit report can help you understand what's been recorded and whether anything needs to be addressed.

A big change to the way Australians pay by card is just weeks away, but many cardholders don't know it's coming.

From 1 October, surcharges on credit and debit card payments will be banned. The Reserve Bank of Australia estimates the change will save consumers around $1.6 billion a year, yet a Finder survey found 43% of Australians were unaware of the upcoming ban.

However, banks are already moving to claw back lost revenue in other ways. Finder says some providers are increasing annual fees and interest rates or reducing rewards and interest-free periods.

If you use a credit card, now could be a good time to check whether its fees, interest rate and benefits are changing. Higher card costs can make existing debt more expensive to manage, particularly if you carry a balance from month to month.

Are you thinking of buying a new car? Australia's new vehicle market is changing, with electric vehicles and Chinese brands taking a growing share of sales.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) data shows 100,939 vehicles were sold through VFACTS in August, up 0.4% year on year.

Across all reporting sources, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) took 24.9% of the new vehicle market, with a record 27,089 sales – the highest number sold in a single month in Australia.

Chinese brands are also gaining ground. BYD, GWM, MG, Geely and Chery all ranked in the VFACTS top 10, collectively accounting for 26.4% of sales.

The rise of electric vehicles and Chinese brands means consumers now have more choice across different vehicle types, price points and features than ever before.

If a new car is on your radar, it's worth reviewing your current debt load before committing. A car loan adds another monthly repayment to your expenses, and taking on more debt than you can comfortably manage increases the risk of missed payments, which can leave a blackmark on your credit file.

Mortgage stress has reached an 18-year high, with new data from Roy Morgan showing 32.5% of mortgage holders (approximately 1.786 million people) were considered 'At Risk' in July. That's a rise of around 180,000 people in just one month.

Even more concerning, 22% of mortgage holders (around 1.21 million Australians), were considered ‘extremely at risk’. That's well above the long-term average of 16.4%

Roy Morgan notes that the three cash rate rises this year, combined with softer employment and household incomes, have added pressure to household budgets.

If you're feeling the strain, act early. Falling behind on mortgage repayments can result in missed payments being recorded on your credit file, which can have long-term financial consequences.

Speak to your lender about an adjusted payment plan or contact the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 for free financial counselling.

Three of Australia’s big four banks are now forecasting at least one more cash rate rise before the end of the year, with NAB raising the possibility of two hikes.

While headline inflation eased to 3.5% in July from 3.8% in June, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, trimmed mean inflation – which the Reserve Bank of Australia watches more closely – remained at 3.6%. Strong household spending is also fuelling concerns that inflationary pressures are persisting.

Further rate increases could place more pressure on household budgets. For example, Canstar estimates a 0.25 percentage point increase in September would add around $91 a month to a mortgage repayment on a $600,000 loan with 25 years remaining. A second rise would add another $92 a month.

With three of the big banks raising the possibility of another rate rise, now may be a good time to review your budget and ensure you can absorb higher repayments. Creating some breathing room could help you manage your debts more comfortably and reduce the risk of missed payments affecting your credit score.

Australians appear to be thinking twice before taking on new debt, with younger borrowers leading the pullback.

Equifax data shows personal loan demand fell 0.9% nationally year on year in July, while car finance demand dropped 7.4%. The decline was particularly pronounced among 26-35-year-olds, with personal loan applications down 5% and car finance applications down 9.8%.

If you're weighing up whether to delay taking out a loan, here’s what to consider:

* Need versus want – could the purchase wait until conditions improve?
* Your existing debt – can you comfortably fit another repayment into your monthly budget?

Delaying a non-essential purchase can give you more time to reduce existing debt or save for a bigger deposit. Keeping debt manageable also lowers the risk of missed repayments that could affect your credit score, making it harder to qualify for credit in the future.

Australians continue to carry significant balances on their credit cards from month to month. Credit card debt accruing interest rose 0.2% in June (an increase of $37 million) to reach $19.5 billion, according to Canstar's analysis of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s credit card statistics.

“With credit card rates sitting at an average of 18.62%, they’re one of the most expensive ways to borrow,” said Canstar's data insights director Sally Tindall. “Anyone carrying a balance month-after-month should be looking for ways to pay it down faster.”

At that kind of rate, interest costs add up quickly, making it increasingly difficult to stay on top of debt. If that leads to late or missed repayments, your credit score may also be affected.

Limiting further credit card shopping and, where possible, paying more than the minimum repayment each month can reduce the balance faster. The sooner you regain control of credit card debt, the lower the risk of it sn*******ng into a longer term credit problem.

Not all lenders respond to financial hardship in the same way, according to Financial Counselling Australia's latest Rate the Banks report.

The survey found the big four banks are generally doing a reasonable job of meeting their hardship obligations. However, non-bank lenders performed significantly worse, with financial counsellors reporting inconsistent support and poor communication when customers sought help.

A hardship arrangement can be an important safeguard if you're experiencing financial difficulty. By working with your lender early, you may be able to negotiate temporary repayment relief and reduce the risk of missed payments or defaults that could reflect on your credit file.

If you sought hardship assistance but your lender failed to properly assess or respond to your request in accordance with its obligations, and adverse credit information was recorded as a result, those listings may be open to challenge depending on the circumstances. A credit repair specialist can review your situation to determine whether the lender complied with its legal obligations and whether any credit reporting entries may be capable of being corrected or removed.
