The Big Red Bash will have its last hurrah in 2027.

"We built this festival over many years; we built it from our heart, but this decision is one we've had to make with our head. It's so sad to know next year will be our last one," founder Greg Donovan said as he announced the news today.

The Big Red Bash attracted thousands of people for the past 13 years, who made the pilgrimage to the edge of the Simpson Desert at Birdsville for the unique music festival.

Greg said that while event costs had increased in recent years, expense wasn't the main challenge.

"It's a tough environment to put an event on in. The logistical and operational challenges are significant."

The event was cancelled this year after widespread flooding inundated the site at the Big Red sand dune.

💛 A Doomadgee State School worker has been named one of 15 finalists for Australia’s Kindest Person — but says living in the remote Gulf community has taught him just as much about kindness.

🚒 David Beil is a finalist in the Kindness in the Regions category after years of volunteering with the Rural Fire Service and St John Ambulance, donating stem cells twice to the same recipient and helping people around Doomadgee.

🤝 Mr Beil says living remotely has shown him how important it is for people to rely on and look out for each other, particularly when outside support can take time to arrive.

💬 “I guess for me living in a remote community, help can go a long way.”

❤️ He says that kindness has also been returned to him — including after attending a fatal crash, when people he did not know approached him to make sure he was okay.

💬 “In the remote places, I guess looking out for each other’s what keeps places in the North West strong.”

🏆 The national winner will be announced at Dreamworld on November 13.
