4 mistakes to avoid when asking for sponsorship

We get a lot of sponsorship enquiries, and honestly, most people mean well.
But there are a few common things we see that can accidentally hurt a pitch before the conversation even starts.

If you’re reaching out to brands, this might help.

1. Sending a generic email
We can usually tell when a message has been copied and pasted.

Even a small personal touch goes a long way and shows you actually want this partnership, not just any one.

2. “I’ll put a sticker on my car”
A sticker is great, but it’s usually not enough on its own.
Brands are often looking for exposure, content, and someone who can represent them well, not just a logo placement.
Thinking a little broader here can really strengthen your pitch.

3. Treating sponsorship like a charity
Sponsorship works best when both sides benefit.
It’s not about asking for help, it’s about starting a partnership where you bring value too, whether that’s content, reach, or engagement.
Framing it this way changes the whole conversation.

4. Ignoring brand alignment

Not every brand will be the right fit, and that’s completely okay. Taking time to approach brands that genuinely align with your values, audience, and sport gives you a much better chance of a yes, and a longer-term relationship.
