Thinking about a car audio upgrade in Melbourne?
If your factory sound system feels flat, lacks bass, becomes harsh at higher volumes, or simply does not give you the sound quality you want, the right upgrade can make a major difference.
At Tower Audio, car audio upgrades are planned around the vehicle, the existing factory system and what the driver actually wants to improve. That may mean replacing one part of the system or building a more complete setup using speakers, amplification, a subwoofer, signal processing and a new head unit.
So, what should you upgrade first?
If music sounds dull or vocals lack clarity, the front speakers are often one of the first areas worth assessing. Factory speakers are designed around the original system, and in many vehicles they can become one of the main limits on sound quality.
But replacing speakers alone is not always the answer.
Some aftermarket speakers perform better when connected to an external amplifier. If the factory radio does not supply enough power, new speakers may not perform as expected. The audio signal coming from the factory system can also affect the final result.
That is why we look at the complete system rather than recommending components in isolation.
Want stronger bass?
A dedicated subwoofer is usually the most direct way to add deeper low-frequency sound. Door speakers can improve mid-bass, but they cannot usually produce the same low-end response as a properly installed subwoofer.
The subwoofer setup can be chosen around your vehicle and available space. Some drivers want a compact solution that takes up very little room. Others want stronger bass and are happy to use more boot space.
Need more volume and control?
An amplifier can provide additional power for upgraded speakers and subwoofers. It can also help the system maintain cleaner sound as the volume increases.
For more advanced factory audio systems, digital signal processing may also be used to manage frequency response, speaker timing and output levels. This can be especially useful when keeping the original factory head unit.
What about replacing the head unit?
For older vehicles, a new head unit can add a larger touchscreen along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, DAB digital radio and reverse camera display, depending on the unit selected.
In many newer cars, the factory screen is connected to other vehicle functions. In those cases, keeping the original screen and upgrading the audio components behind it may be the better option.
A car audio upgrade does not need to mean replacing everything at once.
You may only need:
โข A car speaker upgrade for clearer sound
โข An amplifier for more power and control
โข A subwoofer for stronger bass
โข A head unit with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
โข Sound treatment around speaker locations
โข A complete car sound system upgrade combining several components
The best starting point depends on what you dislike about the existing system.
If the vocals are unclear, start by assessing the speakers and signal.
If the system struggles at higher volume, look at speaker performance and amplification.
If the bass is weak, consider a subwoofer.
If the factory radio feels dated, a head unit upgrade may be the first change worth making.
If several parts of the system are holding the sound back, planning the speakers, amplifier, subwoofer and signal processing together can produce a much better result than buying individual components without a clear plan.
