Every now and then a repair comes in and it’s a “What the F # ?”
This time it’s a late 70’s early 80’s Mack truck straight 8 diesel fuel pump that the customer had taken somewhere for repair.
I have no idea what the hell the “repairer” thought he was doing slicing into the pump body with a 1mm cutting blade but he certainly royally screwed it up.
We know better than most that welding castings can be problematic and although it wasn’t a perfect alloy for welding it was doable.
We ended up having to insert 1.2mm alloy shims into the slices cut into the housing and vee them out to ensure sealing was ok and to try and minimise the top face from pulling downwards.
We also needed leave the hole centre open so the small ¼” hole at the base could be used as a datum point for machining. The same for the hole at the end of the unit where we had to cut out and reweld the threaded section as the threads were damaged also.
For something smaller than a briefcase (remember them?) it’s surprising how much time is involved in getting it all done.
I wonder what our next “What the F # ” job will be.

Another small block twin turbo Ford sump in for some serious modifications to increase capacity and ensure oil is constantly around the oil pickup.
This sump is a Moroso, a very nicely made sump in my opinion.
