LONG WEEKEND READY?

Performing a few simple preventative maintenance checks can help you avoid mechanical issues during your journey.

Here are some basic safety checks that anyone can do:

* Test all exterior lights to ensure they're functioning. A quick way to do this is by parking in a garage at night and checking their reflection on the walls, or getting a friend or family member to help you out.

* Inspect all glass surfaces for cleanliness, and check for any chips, cracks, or scratches.

* Ensure the windscreen wipers and washers are working effectively. Check the condition of the wiper blades—they should be secure and free from damage.

* Test the handbrake to make sure it can hold the car on a steep incline.

* Inspect the seat belts for signs of wear, and verify that they lock securely when pulled sharply.

* Check tyre pressure and overall tyre condition, including tread depth.

* Look under the bonnet and check fluid levels—this includes engine oil, battery water, windscreen washer fluid, engine coolant, brake and clutch fluid, and power steering fluid.

Keeping your vehicle properly maintained throughout the year is essential to ensure the engine, tyres, and other components continue to function safely and reliably.

If you are unsure of anything before your trip let us have a look over the vehicle for you.

Minor Issue Becomes Engine Failure

This vehicle had a minor issue that was not addressed. What was a minor repair turned into a complete engine replacement because corrective steps were not taken in a timely manner.

On this XR8 Falcon a small coolant leak was left unrepaired that led to the engine overheating. The overheating caused initial head gasket damage. The head gasket damage was not repaired, and the vehicle continued to be driven while topping up the coolant regularly.

Eventually the head gasket leak became so bad that enough coolant entered the cylinder and locked up the engine causing catastrophic damage that required a complete engine replacement.

This damage could have been prevented through routine servicing that would have identified the initial coolant leak early. Even if the initial leak had not been picked up and the engine did overheat, repairing the blown head gasket would have prevented any further damage from occurring. This would have reduced the repair bill significantly.

It is important to get your vehicle serviced regularly to prevent small problems becoming big problems. If you have any signs of leaks on your garage floor do not delay in getting it checked out, it could save you a lot of money overall.
