Remember - Fully licenced riders only. Not on your L’s or P’s
🏍️ Are motorcyclists allowed to do this?
It’s called lane filtering, and yes, it’s legal in the ACT for fully licensed motorcyclists when travelling at 30 km/h or less (and when it is safe to do so).
Research shows lane filtering can improve safety by
✅Reducing the risk of back-end crashes
✅ Improving rider visibility
✅ Helping motorcyclists move away safely first when traffic starts moving.
However, lane filtering is not allowed
🚫 Between traffic and the kerb or footpath
🚫 On bicycle or breakdown lanes
🚫 In 40 km/h zones including school zones and roadwork areas
🚫 Past heavy vehicles or buses
🚫 By learner and provisional riders.
As a driver, the safest thing you can do when a motorcyclist is filtering is stay in your lane and be predictable. Do not close the gap, change lanes suddenly or open your car door.
