When running the business is just as demanding as doing the work

Total Motorcycle Service has just passed a big milestone. Ten years in business.

Dave is the owner and the mechanic. The one on the tools. The specialist who takes on the bikes others won’t touch. But behind the scenes, a lot of the sustainability work sits with Steph, the General Manager.

Steph spoke openly about what it takes to keep a one mechanic trade business viable in Canberra. Managing bookings, customer expectations, pricing conversations, and seasonal slowdowns, all while protecting Dave’s capacity and health.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing passion with reality. Loving the work doesn’t automatically make the business sustainable. That’s meant setting firmer boundaries, valuing expertise properly, and re educating customers around time, access, and availability.

It’s not about growth for growth’s sake. It’s about still being here in another ten years.

A good reminder for small business owners. Sometimes the most important work isn’t what customers see. It’s the structure behind it that keeps everything moving.
