The last three utes we've put up here were all wearing the same tyre.

A Triton, a Cannon Alpha and an Everest. Different owners, different budgets, different jobs. All three ended up on Falken Wildpeak all-terrains.

We won.

Number one in Automotive Services at the Macarthur Business Awards, out of 22 finalists in our category.

Honestly, we didn't expect it. There are some very good shops on that list and plenty of them have been at it a lot longer than we have.

But here's the thing about an award like this. It wasn't won last night in a room at Wests. It was won in the workshop, one job at a time.

To our team - every single one of you earned this. The blokes who do the job properly when nobody is watching, who stay back to get a car finished, who give a customer a straight answer even when the easy answer would make us more money. This one is yours.

And to our customers - we could not have done it without you. Every person who trusted us with their car, came back again, and then told a mate about us. That is the only reason we were on that list at all. Thank you.

Back on the tools today, same as always.

Happy long weekend from all of us at JAX Tyres & Auto Campbelltown.

Whatever you've got on - the coast, the caravan, a trailer full of mulch, or three straight days of doing absolutely nothing - have a good one and get home safe.

One thing before you go, and it costs nothing. Check your tyre pressures. Not a guess at the servo - the actual numbers off the placard inside the driver's door. If you're carrying a load or towing, those numbers go up, they don't stay the same.

Five minutes in the driveway is worth more than anything else you'll do to that car this weekend.

And have a look at the spare while you're there. It's always flat. It's never flat on a Tuesday.

That is what a 2 inch lift kit actually looks like before it goes on.

Not a couple of spacers, which is what most people picture. New leaf packs for the rear, coil-over struts and shocks for the front, U-bolts, shackles, bushes. Every load bearing part of the suspension, replaced as a matched set.

It all went into this LDV T60 MAX, along with a set of all-terrains. Swipe for the before and the after.

The reason the kit matters is the difference between a ute that sits higher and a ute that actually drives better with a load in the back. A proper kit is engineered to work together - spring rate matched to damper, ride height matched to both. Lift a ute with parts that were never designed to talk to each other and you end up with something that looks the part and rides like a shopping trolley.

The all-terrains finish it off. They fill the guards properly and the whole thing finally looks like what it's built for.

Then it goes on the alignment rack. After a lift the factory settings are wrong, and there's no sense wrecking a brand new set of tyres on the drive home.

The one thing that hadn't been sorted was what it was standing on.

So: Black Rhino heavy duty alloys in matte black, wrapped in Falken Wildpeak all-terrains.

Here's the part most people get wrong, and it's the wheels. Plenty of aftermarket alloys are designed for looks and load rated for something a lot lighter than a seven seat wagon. Put a roof platform, an awning, a full family and a boot full of gear on top of that and you've asked a wheel to do a job it was never rated for. Black Rhino's heavy duty range is built for exactly this. On a touring wagon that matters a great deal more than the finish does.

The Wildpeak is the other half of it. It's the all-terrain we fit more of than anything else, and that's not an accident. It's quiet enough to live with on the M5 every morning and it still has a proper block pattern for when the road turns to dirt. Most people want a tyre that looks serious without making the drive to work miserable. That's the one.

Lifted Raptor on 35s. Looks unreal. Drove like it wanted to be in the next lane.

That's not a knock on the build. It's just what happens. The moment you lift a vehicle and put bigger tyres under it, the factory alignment settings are wrong. Camber, caster, toe - all of it shifts. The car has no idea you've changed anything.

What you feel is a steering wheel that sits slightly off centre, a bit of wander at 100 on the Hume, and steering that doesn't quite come back on its own.

What you don't feel - until it costs you - is the inside edge of a brand new set of 35s wearing out in a fraction of the time it should.

So: four wheel alignment on the machine, set for how she actually sits now. Back to driving straight.

If you've had a lift, new springs, a bar fitted or bigger tyres put on anywhere at all and you haven't had it aligned since, book it in. On a set of 35s it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

Lifted or lowered, it makes no difference. The moment you change a car's ride height, the alignment is wrong.

This Integra Type R came in on coilovers. The owner wanted it sitting lower than it was, so we wound it down to where he wanted it and put it straight on the rack.

Here's the bit people miss. Dropping a car changes the geometry just as much as lifting one does. Lower it and the camber goes negative, the toe follows it, and the car quietly starts eating the inside shoulder of a set of tyres you paid good money for. It'll tramline and feel nervous over bumps as well, which isn't what anyone buys a Type R for.

So: wind it down, then align it. Not six months later when the inside edges are already gone.

Coilovers, lowering springs, a lift, new bushes, bigger tyres - if the ride height or the suspension has changed, the alignment has to be reset to suit. We've got the Hunter gear here to do it properly and show you the numbers before and after.

Which is why this one came to us for Michelin Pilot Sport 5.

You can build whatever you like under the bonnet. At some point every bit of it has to go through the tyres. Get that part wrong and the power is just noise and smoke. Get it right and the car actually does what the dyno sheet says it will.

Now, most of what comes through here isn't an 850hp Mustang. But the same thing is true of your Corolla on the way to work: the tyre is the only part of the car that ever touches the road. Everything else is just a suggestion.
