๐ŸŒŠ World Oceans Day ๐ŸŒŠ

The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet, produces much of the oxygen we breathe, supports incredible biodiversity, and connects communities around the world.

Spending our days on the water gives us a daily reminder of just how special, and how important, our oceans are.

Today, we celebrate the beauty, wonder and value of the marine environment, and the people working to understand and protect it for future generations. ๐Ÿชธ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฆ–๐ŸŒŠ Happy Global Dinosaur Day! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿฆ–
Today weโ€™re celebrating the ancient ocean creatures that have outlived the dinosaurs and continue to swim among us!

๐ŸŸ Coelacanth โ€“ Thought extinct until 1938, this โ€œliving fossilโ€ dates back 360 million years and can live over 60 years!
๐Ÿ Lamprey โ€“ Parasitic and ancient, this jawless fish has survived 360 million years and could hold clues to healing spinal injuries.
๐Ÿฆ€ Horseshoe Crab โ€“ Not a crab at all, but are related to scorpions, spiders and ticks! These hardy survivors date back 450 million years and have 10 eyes!
๐Ÿš Nautilus โ€“ Once rulers of the ancient seas 500 million years ago, these spiraled mollusks are living relics of Earthโ€™s early oceans.
๐ŸŒŠ Sea Jellies โ€“ Ghostly and graceful, jellyfish have drifted through our oceans for at least 500 million yearsโ€”maybe even longer.
๐Ÿ‹ Pygmy Right Whale โ€“ Rare and mysterious, this elusive whale species emerged 17โ€“25 million years ago.
๐Ÿฆˆ Frilled Shark โ€“ With its eel-like body and 80-million-year legacy, this deep-sea dweller is truly prehistoric.

These incredible creatures remind us that the ocean is a living time capsule. Let's protect these ancient survivors for future generations to admire. ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒ World Reef Awareness Day ๐ŸŒŠ
A day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of coral reefs and encouraging action to protect them. ๐Ÿชธ
The day serves as a call to action for individuals and organizations to take steps to protect coral reefs โ€” from adopting reef-friendly practices, to volunteering, and spreading awareness.

These incredible ecosystems are more than just beautiful โ€” they are essential to life on Earth:

๐Ÿ  Support essential plant and fish life
๐ŸŽฃ Contribute to a thriving fishing industry
๐Ÿ๏ธ Protect our beaches and coastlines from erosion
๐ŸŒŠ Act as natural filters for our oceans
๐Ÿ’Š Provide life-saving medicines
โ™ป๏ธ And may even house the only animal on Earth capable of consuming plastic!

Even small changes in your daily actions can help to protect the reef. ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒŠ Happy World Dugong Day!

Today, we celebrate the gentle dugong (Dugong Dugong), a cousin of the manatee, affectionately known as the sea cow. These marine mammals can grow up to 3m and weigh 360+kg. These peaceful grazers feed on seagrass in shallow coastal waters and are an important part of our marine ecosystem.

Despite being protected in many regions, dugongs are vulnerable to extinction due to their long lifespan, slow reproduction, and threats to their seagrass habitats. These beautiful creatures deserve to be protected, and the seagrass meadows they rely on. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿชธ Thereโ€™s a lot of gear involved when the Reef Recovery, Adaptation and Restoration Team from the Australian Institute of Marine Science heads to sea!

This wraps up a 15-day charter assessing reef health across sections of the Great Barrier Reef - including capturing imagery used to create impressive 3D reef models.

From stacks of carefully organised tubs covering the back deck, to rows of gear offloaded and lined up on the wharfโ€ฆ and suddenly Miss Rankinโ€™s big back deck feels very empty and quiet again. โ›ด๏ธ
