The honest answer is there isn't a fixed kilometre interval. It depends on how the caravan has been used, where it's been towed, how much it weighs, how the brake controller has been adjusted and, most importantly, whether the brakes have been serviced regularly.

This caravan recently came into our workshop for a complete 10-inch electric brake replacement, and it provided a great example of why regular inspections are so important.

Over time, every electric brake system gradually loses braking performance.

How do electric caravan brakes work?

Unlike hydraulic brakes on your tow vehicle, caravan electric brakes rely on an electromagnet inside each brake drum.

When you apply the brakes, the brake controller sends power to the magnet. The magnet grips the rotating brake drum and pulls an actuating arm, forcing the brake shoes against the inside of the drum to slow the caravan.

Caravan A Frame Welds missing 🤯
Today we did a roadworthy and gas certificate for one of our customers and noticed the A-frame wasn’t fully welded on the body, this is definitely not a normal occurrence, but the customer asked us if we could get it sorted. We are caravan / coach builders and are fully qualified for the task of structural vehicle welding, there are many odd jobs we get to do as apart of our trade which keeps it interesting.
We got this one all sorted so the customer can rest easy knowing that the A-frame is all welded up properly.
We also do Caravan prepurchase inspections along with our normal Caravan safety certificate inspections and Caravan gas certificate inspections.
