40 Years Ago Today - CERAMCO NEW ZEALAND won the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, winning both Line Honors and Handicap, one of only 5 yachts to ever do so in the history of the yacht race. Hope to race her in the 2021 race. This was Peter Blake's "shakedown" prior to the 1981-1982 Whitbred Around the World and famous dual between CERAMCO and FLYER.

Ceramco and Sir Peter Blake and his team ran a very respectable 1981-82 Whitbred race.

This a day to celebrate the life of one of the titans of The Ocean Race, Sir Peter Blake.

Incredibly, Blake competed in the first five editions of the race, beginning as a wet-behind-the-ears rookie on Burton Cutter in 1973 and completing his obsession with the event with one of the most commanding victories in sport. As skipper of Steinlager 2 in the 1989-90 race, Blake led his team to victory in all six legs of the race, achieving a life-long goal.

From there, he would go on to lead Team New Zealand to an incredible win (1995) and dominant defence (2000) in the America's Cup, before moving on to pursue his own sustainability goals in partnership with the UN. Tragically, he was killed by pirates, on this day in December 2001, during one of his expeditions in South America.

Blake will always be remembered as one of the best to ever compete in our sport and for the leadership he offered and the example he set.

Been watching the 75th Rolex Sydney-Hobart. 39 Years ago our boat "Ceramco New Zealand" won the Double - both Line Honours and Handicap, one of only a handful of yachts to have ever done so. It's on our radar to do the race 2020 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of this fantastic win in 1980, just prior to Sir Peter Blake & crew setting off to do the 1981-82 RTW Whitbred.

First held in 1945, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is one of the world’s great ocean races. The 628 nautical mile offshore challenge has formed a signifi...
