🚨 THE WORKSHOP IS OPEN. THE MECHANIC IS ON HIS BREAK.
Imagine walking into a garage at 12:35 to ask about a noise.
The reception door is open. The lights are on. You can see a mechanic sitting with a sandwich.
The adviser says somebody can look shortly, but that technician is on his break.
The customer replies:
“It’s only a quick listen. I’m standing right here.”
The mechanic has already had lunch interrupted twice this week.
Yesterday’s quick question became a twenty-minute conversation, a bonnet opening and a cold cup of tea.
He says:
“If I’m available every time somebody arrives, when exactly am I off?”
The customer has taken their own lunch break to visit and doesn’t have unlimited time either.
Both people are watching the same clock for different reasons.
The boss wants customers to feel welcome.
The staff want being on a break to mean something more than eating beside a phone they still have to answer.
Could reception book a proper time?
Could breaks be staggered without leaving one employee permanently covering everyone else?
Has the business advertised continuous technical help that its staffing cannot actually provide?
And if a genuine urgent situation arises, is there a fair way to provide cover and restore the interrupted break?
The mechanic isn’t refusing to work.
The customer isn’t wrong to ask when help is available.
The argument starts when the garage’s opening hours quietly become one person’s obligation to be available every minute inside them.
DEVIL’S ADVOCATE TIME… 😈
What would you do?
A — Explain the wait and offer the customer a clear appointment or callback.
B — Interrupt the mechanic because an open business should provide immediate help.
C — Arrange fair cover and stagger breaks where staffing allows.
D — Review whether the service being advertised matches actual availability.
E — Deal with genuine urgency through a clear cover plan and protect the interrupted break.
When a business is open, should every employee be available—or should customers expect that staff still get a proper break?
