This is a Porsche Cayenne.
It exists because Porsche looked at the 911—a low, lightweight sports car—and decided what it really needed was another metre of height, several hundred kilograms, five doors and enough luggage space for a family holiday.
Naturally, everyone thought Porsche had lost its mind.
Then the Cayenne arrived and did something deeply irritating: it worked.
It could carry children, suitcases, golf clubs and a week’s shopping, yet still accelerate with enough determination to rearrange the groceries. It was comfortable, luxurious and practical—but when shown a corner, it didn’t lean over and surrender like a frightened wardrobe.
It behaved like a Porsche.
This one has enormous wheels, serious red brake calipers and enough computer systems to monitor a small country. Inside, everything is leather, screens and buttons. There are controls for the suspension, transmission, climate, entertainment and probably the tides.
And all of it depends on one surprisingly small object: the 12-volt lithium battery.
This Cayenne came to Pro Mechanical to have that battery replaced.
Now, in an ordinary old car, the battery started the engine and powered the headlights. If it became tired, you replaced it, adjusted the clock and continued with your life.
The Cayenne is not an ordinary old car.
Its battery wakes the computers, security system, electronic transmission, control modules, lighting, displays, sensors and countless other devices. Without stable voltage, the Porsche doesn’t simply refuse to start. It may illuminate the dashboard with so many warnings that it appears to be celebrating Christmas.
The lithium battery is lighter and more sophisticated than a conventional lead-acid battery. It also has its own battery-management electronics monitoring voltage, temperature and cell condition.
So you cannot simply throw in whatever rectangular object happens to fit the hole.
The correct battery must be installed, the charging system checked and the vehicle’s energy-management system updated so it knows a new battery has arrived. Otherwise, the car and battery may spend the next few years disagreeing about how electricity works.
Then there are the brakes.
Those huge red calipers aren’t decorative. The Cayenne is a large, powerful SUV capable of generating speed at a rate that seems incompatible with its size. Its braking system must then convert all that speed into heat without smoke, drama or an unexpected journey through somebody’s hedge.
The Porsche Cayenne is ridiculous.
It is too large to be a sports car, too fast to be a sensible family SUV and too complicated to tolerate guesswork.
And that is precisely why it is brilliant.
At North Star Motors, we understand European vehicles—from their enormous brakes to their unusually intelligent batteries.
