Acoustic windscreens

Acoustic laminated glass technologies have been developed to combat levels of noise pe*******on in vehicles. Noise mainly comes from the sound of the car's engine, air and other environmental factors. Lower noise levels mean that the driver will become less tired, and make communication inside the vehicles more comfortable, thus contributing to overall safety.

Rain Sensors

Rain sensors are a system that automatically detects rain as it hits the windscreen. Usually set via a switch on the steering column a rain sensor means that the speed of the wipers will adjust automatically from stop to full speed according to how hard rain is falling. The sensor is fitted behind or near to the internal rear view mirror. Rain landing on the screen causes a change in the angle of the light hitting the sensor which in turn activates a switch and triggers the wipers. The harder it rains the faster the wipers operate.

Heated windscreen

Unlike the more obvious heating elements in a rear window those in a windscreen are very fine. Look for very fine wavy lines that run top to bottom across the width of the screen these are the heating elements. The elements are usually in two parts and there may be a gap at each side as well as a slightly larger gap down the centre of the screen. Mainly in prestige vehicles for example Land Rover, range Rover, BMW & Lexus.

Lane departure warning

Lane departure warning (LDW) systems warn the driver if they unintentionally stray across the lane. Most LDW systems use a forward facing camera mounted by the rear view mirror to identify the lane markings and determine if they are crossed. Some, Citroën for example, use an array of infra-red sensors mounted underneath the front bumper. Most systems operate at speeds in excess of 60kph and require lane markings to be present.

Head up display

Prestige vehicles such as BMW have head up display systems that project certain information on to the windscreen such as speed, temperature, navigation instructions and more. It is designed for the driver to be able to keep an eye on the important information about the vehicle without taking his/her eyes off the road.
