Age alone doesn't tell me whether a used car is worth buying.

I've seen older vehicles that have been properly maintained and are still in very good condition, as well as much newer cars that already show signs of poor maintenance or neglect.
How the car has been looked after over the years often matters just as much as the number on the odometer or the year on the registration.
That's why during a pre-purchase inspection, I look at the vehicle as a whole - its current condition, maintenance, wear and any repairs that may be coming up.

An older car isn't automatically a bad car. The question is how that particular car has been treated.

Keeping an eye on the coolant level is important, but there's more to a healthy cooling system than what's inside the reservoir.

Hoses, radiator components, the thermostat, water pump and other parts of the system all work together to keep the engine at the correct operating temperature.

Leaks, deteriorated components or cooling system problems can eventually lead to overheating - and potentially much more expensive engine repairs.

Regular servicing gives us an opportunity to check the system for visible leaks, deterioration and other signs that something may need attention.

“It's been well maintained” is something you'll hear a lot when looking at used cars.
But for me, well maintained isn't just about how clean the car looks or whether it's recently had an oil change.

I look at the vehicle as a whole. Are maintenance items being dealt with? Are there signs that problems have been ignored? Do the condition, mileage and history make sense together?

A clean car can still have mechanical issues, and an older car that isn't perfect cosmetically can sometimes have been looked after very well.
That's why a pre-purchase inspection is about checking the actual condition of the vehicle rather than relying on how it's described.

A humming or rumbling noise that changes with road speed can sometimes be more than just tyre noise.

A worn wheel bearing can gradually become noisier as it deteriorates and may eventually affect the smooth and safe operation of the wheel assembly.

The tricky part is that different noises can sound very similar from inside the car. That's why proper diagnosis matters before replacing parts.

Low kilometres can make a used car look like the obvious choice, but mileage is only one part of the story.
A car can have relatively low kilometres and still show signs of poor maintenance, long periods without use, short-trip driving or simply not being looked after properly.

At the same time, a higher-kilometre vehicle that's been well maintained can sometimes be in much better overall condition.

That's why during a pre-purchase car inspection, I don't judge a vehicle by the odometer alone. I look at its actual condition and whether what I'm seeing makes sense for its age, mileage and history.

The number on the dashboard is useful information - but it doesn't tell you everything about the car.

A good pre-purchase car inspection isn't about creating the longest possible list of faults.

Most used cars will have something that isn't perfect. What matters is understanding which issues are normal wear and tear, which ones will need attention soon, and which could turn into expensive problems.

That's why I don't judge a car simply by how many things I find. I look at the overall condition, the seriousness of each issue and what it could realistically mean for the buyer after the purchase.

Sometimes a car with several minor faults can still be a much better buy than one with a single major mechanical problem.

When I carry out pre-purchase inspections across Brisbane, the goal is to give you a realistic picture of the car - not just a long checklist.

The truth is, that's not really my decision to make.
Every buyer has a different budget, different expectations and a different reason for buying a car. A problem that might be a deal-breaker for one person could be perfectly manageable for someone else.

My job is to inspect the vehicle thoroughly, explain what I've found, identify potential repairs and help you understand what those issues could mean for you after the purchase.

I'm not there to sell you the car or talk you out of it. I'm there to give you an independent and honest assessment so you can make your own decision with the right information.

Finding a problem during a pre-purchase car inspection doesn't automatically mean the car is a bad buy.

Almost every used car will have something that needs attention. What matters is understanding what the issue actually is, how serious it is and what it may cost to repair.

A minor leak or worn component is very different from a major mechanical problem that could turn into an expensive repair shortly after purchase.
When I carry out pre-purchase inspections across Brisbane, my job isn't to simply give a car a pass or fail. It's to explain what I've found, put the issues into perspective and give you the information you need to decide whether the car still makes sense for you.

Sometimes the findings can even help you negotiate the price to account for repairs that will be needed.

A lower price doesn't always mean you're getting a better deal. During pre-purchase car inspections in Brisbane, I sometimes find vehicles that look like a bargain at first but already have a list of maintenance or repair items waiting to be done.

Worn suspension components, oil leaks, overdue servicing or other mechanical issues can quickly add to the real cost of buying the vehicle.

On the other hand, paying a little more for a well-maintained car can sometimes save you considerably more after the purchase.

My job isn't to tell you which car to buy. It's to show you its actual condition, explain what I've found and help you understand the potential costs before you make your decision.
