🔥 Toyota E56 ~ E58 Gearbox — One Take 🔧
Everything E-Series for Levin / Trueno / Celica / Corolla / 4AGZE swapped & more — let’s go! 🚀

Before the E35X / E351, when Toyota needed a lightweight gearbox that was identical-ish in design philosophy to the E51 / E153, they delivered the small yet mighty E56 ~ E58 💥
Compact. Clever. Proven.

🔧 Fundamentals — E56 ~ E58
⚖️ Lightweight: approx ~45 kg / 88 lbs

🛣️ Ratios
E58 (starter cover at rear of bellhousing)
1️⃣ 3.214 | 2️⃣ 2.045 | 3️⃣ 1.333 | 4️⃣ 0.972 | 5️⃣ 0.820 ↔️ Final Drive: 3.94
E56 (starter top-front of bellhousing)
1️⃣ 3.538 | 2️⃣ 2.045 | 3️⃣ 1.333 | 4️⃣ 1.028 | 5️⃣ 0.820 ↔️ Final Drive: 4.235

⚙️ 13mm undercut gears
• Same width as E351 (13 mm), same bearing style
• Smaller than S54 (16 mm) & E153 (18 mm)
• Huge ratio interchangeability from the narrow E family

🔨 Strong design
• Bearing architecture mirrors E153
• Small gears, but smarter load paths
• Oil pump for consistent oiling / optional cooler
• Proven at 400+ whp ~ more when we built them

🔩 Built to rebuild
• Designed for full strip & service
• Early models = single synchro
• Late production = dual synchro upgrades

✨ Enhancements That Matter

✨ Shot peening (minimum recommended):
• Output shaft pinion & Diff ring gear
• Gears 1–2–3 (or any heavily loaded gear)

🛠️ ISF (Isotropic Superfinishing):
• Hub rings & hubs at minimum

⚙️ Key to rebuild is more than synchros:
• Reproduction Springs by 2Spec Garage
• Oil pump rebuild & thorough cleaning of oil paths
• Dog teeth, hub teeth correction or replacement
• Always replace input sealed bearing and 3/4 fork to later design steel fork (modifications maybe required depending on generation)
• Internal seals
• Preload / shim to spec
• Proprietary internal modifications and more!

🔮 Extras:
• Weight-reduction opportunities • L*D options • Ratio swaps

🏁 Final Word
The E56 ~ E58 is light, fun, and underrated — rebuilt by 2Spec Garage standards it becomes next-level 🔥

🔮 Plan ahead: rebuild now, upgrade where it counts, and future-proof your drivetrain.

🔧 2Spec Garage holds limited rebuild stock:
• Reproduction early single synchros
• Reproduction spring kits
• L*D bearings & other discontinued parts

📩 Enquire early — once these parts are gone, they’re gone.
❓ Got questions? Build one now?

Let’s talk E-Series 🔥

⚙️ TRANSFER THE TRANSFER CASE INFORMATION

NEWS FLASH 🚨 E-Series transfer case — DISCONTINUED PARTS! 🔧 “Discontinued” is now appearing across a long list of service parts for E-Series transfer cases:

E150F • E151F • E152F • E154F • E250F • E352F • E353F • E359F • E55F • E56F • E57F

DONT SKIP REPLACING SERVICE PARTS!!

The good news? We can still rebuild all of them. 💪

Our narrow focus on E-Series gearboxes means we’ve built inventory & supply channels around finding solutions — including seals, bearings and replacement options where Toyota parts are no longer available.

⚠️ And it’s not always a simple drop-in replacement.
Some solutions require machining, modification or adapting available components — and this will only become more common as these transfer cases age.

🔩 Transfer cases live under constant meshing load.
That makes correct oil grade, lubrication and heat management critical to gear & bearing life. Solution to oil grade and cooler or modifications varies based on your use.

⏳ Delaying a rebuild at this point in parts availability can turn a straightforward service into a much bigger challenge later.

If your E-Series transfer case is showing wear, noise, heat or contamination — now may be the time to do it.

👉 Think it’s time? Do it with us.

🔥Toyota S54 / S52-S55 Gearbox — One Take 🔧
Everything S-Series for Celica, MR2, Curren & Camry. Let’s go! 🚀

These gearboxes are legends of their day and still widely used... but ⏳Rebuild is now a must — age, wear, and discontinuing of parts availability mean get in now before it’s too late.

⚠️ Reality Check

Every teardown = replace the two deep-groove bearings at the end of the shafts
👉 Shaft movement is a core S5x challenge

❌ Discontinued - Bellhousing output shaft bearing & lots more
❌ Partial synchro's are still available, not full sets
🧪 Our hybrid and available stock allows for a rebuild!!!
👉 Diff strength taps out 350–400 whp 💥

🧠 Fundamentals S5x

⚖️ Lightweight: ~40 kg / 88 lbs
🏎️ Street friendly ratios:
3.285 | 2.1960 | 3 1.322 | 4 1.028 | 5 0.820
↔️ Final drive: 4.176
↔️ 16 mm undercut gears — bigger than E56/E58/E351 13mm, smaller than E153 18mm
🔩 Straight roller bearings in the bellhousing - efficient high load
🔧 Smart design in seals can be replaced externally
Built by Toyota Motor Corporation with efficiency and feel in mind. 💙

🔬 Enhancements That Matter

✨ Shot peening minimum: output shaft pinion, gears 1–2–3 (or where driven hard) diff ring
🧪 ISF (Isotropic Superfinishing): hub rings & hubs is the minimum
🔧 Shifter shaft springs by 2Spec Garage (generation dependent)
👉 Goal: clean engagement, minimum friction, max life
🧪 Oil, Automatic fluid if has now (red black) or GL4 75-90w (after rebuild or if has now). Can not mix! Splash style oiling (no pump) relying on fresh good oil.

💳 L*D — Choose Wisely - From $400 USD

Rule is first fix grip, suspension, bushings, tyres ◉ before thinking of an L*D. An L*D adds internal strain — internals must be at spec 💯.

✨Traction concept, add into your existing open diff. Adds L*D action. Caution as it doesnt add housing strength, so great for naturally aspirated 4 cylinder.

❄️ Torsen / ATB (MR2 ZZ W30 style):
Smooth, progressive, ideal for ice, autocross & most motorsport for average driver

💥 Plated L*D (Kaaz):
Aggressive bite, best de-stacked to ~30% (max 60%) if wanting smoother cornering
Faster, harder acceleration on throttle
⚖️ Reminder: L*D adds weight!

Note - speedo cog must match the differential speedo ring, different shape / pitch between camry & mr2 etc.

🏁 Final Word

The S54 / S53 / S55 is light and fun — perfect for street shifts — but it demands respect, maintenance, enhancements.

Plan for the future by rebuilding now and upgrade where it counts 🔮

🔧 2Spec Garage is actively working on solutions of discounted parts and holds limited rebuild parts that are discounted.

📩 Enquire early — these parts won’t last forever.

Shift Fix by Doing This – MR2 PART 1 ⚙️🔥

Cabin | Precision Shifting Starts Here

A great shift starts with precision movement between the gear stick and cable cabin end. 🧠 Worn components, which they all are at this age, create slop and add to mis-shifts.

Before you join online hype of blame the gearbox, synchros, or “Toyota things”, PART 1 fixes everything between the cabin and the external of the box.

The Golden Rule ~ starts at shifter sticks to cables & OEM geometry works. Poor aftermarket parts geometry binds cables, kills feel, and destroys gearboxes.
✔️ Exception: Hux Racing (separate post of shifter geometry)

⚙️ Refresh (MR2): Estimated prices
Shift Lever Ball Seat – 33556-17010 – $10
Shift Lever Bush – 33548-12021 – $5
Retainer Bush – 90386-12034 (x2) – $2
Solid shifter base plate bushings – $15 (Various vendors or DIY)
Spring, Torsion 90508-20084 – $3
Cable end bushings (Poly or Spherical) 👍 We prefer JL Fabrication Poly for low maintenance – $25
Shim for Ball Cup - $10 Reproduction by 2Spec Works

Too busy to organise the above, we sell in a KIT. Cheaper than your local Toyota - delivered.

Final Word

Before you destroy a gearbox / transmission with a mis-shift.

👉 3SGTE / 5SGTE / BEAMS ~ Never rebuilding bolt-on. OEM disasters, causes, contributors, effects.

📉 Factory evolution (3SGTE)
Toyota improved flow... but only for stock power.
Gen2: 220whp ❌ (restriction issues, spin bearing, crack piston top, lean out and more)
Gen3: 250whp (+13%)
Gen4: 260whp (+18%)
💡 Modern builds (400whp+) exceed this by miles → flow must scale accordingly beyond Gen3 baseline

🧠 Bearing & Ring Gap clearance strategy
Later gens increased +10% and so should you even for a Gen2!
🔧 What to do depends on HP, bearing clearance example Gen2 0.025mm / 1 thou vs minimum of 0.050 / 2 thou for what we build.
Higher power builds need more again

⚙️ Engine Oil pump evolution (flow capacity)
Changes in pump size, speed of the pump and cavitation relief. See attached image data.
🔧 What to do depends on your sump:
Gen2 → upgrade to 98+ 5SFE + shim relief (see Ryans video). PN 15100-74030 or ATS Racing oil pump even better as its already shimmed
Gen2 → small to medium sized turbos, upgrade to Gen3/beams 25T oil pump cog with Gen3+ 177T timing belt
Gen3/4/5 & Beams → Remove pump to sump relief restriction, separate clean/polish relief valve / system & test or replace relief spring
High RPM / HP builds this list gets longer......................

⛽ Fuel system = flow too
Injectors: Gen2: 440cc vs Gen3+: 540cc (+22%)
Rail bore (what happened):
Gen2: 3mm (area 7) ❌
Gen3: 6mm (area 28) (+400%)
Gen4/5: 9mm (area 63) (+800%)
🔧 What to do depends on your HP & Injectors:
👉 Always bore Gen2 rail — even stock hp
👉 Match rail to injector + power target
👉 Ultrasonic clean injectors every ~3 years (fuel quality dependent)
👉 Aftermarket injectors - go dynamically matched, $$z vs outcomes 1,000cc ($) vs 1,462cc ($$) vs 1,750cc ($$$)

🌡️ Cooling coolant flow basics
Thermostat:
Gen2: 56mm
Gen3+: 64mm (+14% + major system redesign)
What to do
👉 Run low-temp (77 degree Celsius ~ not lower), high-flow thermostat, preferably failsafe
👉 Reduces thermal spikes → improves longevity

❌STOP ignoring flow, STOP relying on "race shop" bolt-ons. Modifications, you port match / gasket match the intake manifold to head ~ why skip gasket matching the water pump! or other places, and so on.

⚡ Extra edge (we go further)
Small modifications can stabilize pressure at high RPM, improve longevity and prevent disasters. Forums enthusiasts take guesses from the disasters, and most race shops repeat. We calculate cause, contributor to the effect.

🚨 Final word

Our baseline involves most modifications because $s vs outcomes = cheap vs high reward.

Everything that flows has a limit, a rate, and a failure point — engineering a system that can sustain your power levels that’s reliable every moment.
👉 Validate the flow
👉 Or speak to someone who has the data
Flow isn’t optional — it’s survival 💥

🔒 Enhancement Evidence Gen 3/4/5 3SGTE / 5SGTE & Beams 3SGE - Oil system reality check!

Restrictions you don't see, you don't want. Factory oil System was said to be the best in the later gens - or was it?

👉 3SGTE & 3SGE designed in different engineering thought bubbles, mismatched sizing, sharp turns, and slow paths that fight themselves as RPM / flow needs climb = restrictive by design when performance enters the chat.

This isn't bolt-on building that 99.9% of the shops do.

Enhancement modifications is what we do every time! so every component works with the system efficiency, not against it 🔥

Proprietary modifications and enhancements is our baseline, built stronger for longer. Contact 2Spec Works to get next level results,

⛽💥 Tuning Smart E10 ~ Aus Fuel Showdown: Power vs Cost💥⛽

💰 Today’s prices & comparison consumption per 100kms:
E10 (94 RON) – $2.21 📈$19.89 = 5,000kms $994.50
98 RON – $2.68 📈 $24.66 = 5,000kms $1,206.00
E85 – $2.39 📈 $31.07 = $1,553.50

⚖️ The reality check:
🔥 98 RON = Paying top dollar for a dyno peak +2–3%
🌽 E85 = BIG power + cooling effect, but drinks fuel fast
🚗 E10 (94 RON Daily King) = underrated, sweet spot for daily driving power and cost

💡 Why E10 deserves respect:
✅ Ethanol content = extra oxygen → more efficient burn
✅ Cooler combustion temps vs straight petrol
✅ Small drop in peak HP vs 98... but not as big as people think !
E10 = balanced performance + savings 💸

⚡ Daily tune advantage ~ analysis:
Real-world powerband comparison for 3SGTE • stock cams • G25-660 • 400whp

⚔️ E10 (94 RON) vs 98 RON — Powerband Breakdown

🔥 Spool & Boost Threshold
E10:
⏱️ Slightly earlier spool (~100–200 rpm sooner)
❄️ Ethanol content → cooler charge + faster burn helps transient response

98 RON:
⏱️ Marginally later spool
🔥 Relies more on ignition advance than charge cooling
🔒 More timing + boost headroom = peak HP +5~10hp

💪 Midrange Torque (3,500–6,500 rpm)
E10:
⚡ Strong, punchy torque
📉 Slightly lower peak cylinder pressure due to knock limit
✅ Often very close to 98 when tuned properly

🏁 Top-End Power (6,500–8,300+ rpm)
98RON:
✅ Holds timing longer for a slightly higher peak
👉 This is where you should be using E85 for real gains

🏁 Verdict for Smart Tuning Setup
🚗 Daily / street: E10 is extremely viable — strong midrange, great response, cheaper!!!
⚡ Switch to E85 when you’re chasing power

Understand unconventional uniquely 2Spec Works. Passion, precision, enhancement, and evidence. ⚙️📊

Low overhead. Lean operational practices. Zero waste. No/lowest mark-up on parts. No excess — just what gets best results.

Every process refined for one outcome — next level enhancement.

Scope is narrow by designs:
Components enhancements for MR2, GT-Four ~ E-series gearboxes / transmissions (S series phasing out), 3SGTE / 5SGTE, components that need enhancement to perform.
One out-of-scope build per year. No distractions.

Most mechanic / transmission shops build everything and anything to “it works.” New part. Torque it. Big dollar charged. Ship it. Done because "it works". That’s not the standard here — and not what these components need to perform at the next level.

What sets us apart isn’t just ex*****on — it’s development.

Our baseline: Proprietary modifications. We measure, validate, and prove — show you the data of enhancement.
Reproduction parts. Specialised tools and service items.
Efficiency corrections / oiling improvements, weight reduction, strengthening, load management — developed, tested, and evolved. 🔬

E-series. We’re tightening further:
Parts and support moving toward those committed to doing it properly. No more supporting half-done builds (shops). Evidence of issues or no selling parts that don’t make sense to the problem.

Most shops focus is to “it works.” New part. Torque it. Ship it. Done. That’s not the standard here — and not what these components need.

We operate on another level 🏁

Higher capability. Tighter control. Deeper process. Committed results. Next level components under real conditions. 🏁

No hype. No spotlight. The result speaks. The owner sees the results.

Enthusiast mindset. MR2 & GTFour since 1996.
Relentless refinement. Passion before profit. 🔥

🔥 ENGINE BAY COOLING — EVERY DEGREE COUNTS! 🔥

An engine bay is a battle of heat, airflow and component placement. What works for one build might not work for another. 🛠️Different heat sources, and sometimes one component becomes the problem for everything around it.

💨 AIRFLOW RESTRICTIONS
Air needs somewhere to enter, pass through and escape!

❄️ INTERCOOLER LOCATION & TYPE
Front mount, side mount, air-to-air or A/C — each has advantages and compromises. The best intercooler isn't always the biggest one. Location, airflow, pressure drop and heat soak all matter.

🌡️ COOLANT PIPES
Overheating coolant pipes can transfer unwanted heat into the engine bay, intake or nearby components. Routing, insulation and airflow can all make a difference.

🔥 TURBO EFFICIENCY
A turbo operating outside its efficiency range can create more heat than necessary. Sometimes the answer isn't more cooling — it's choosing the right turbo and operating point.

🌬️ INTAKE TEMPERATURES
An intake sitting near a major heat source can absorb heat before the air even reaches the turbo. Relocating the intake, shielding it or improving fresh-air supply can help.

❄️ INTERCOOLER LOCATION & TYPE
Front mount, side mount, air-to-air or water-to-air — each has advantages and compromises. The best intercooler isn't always the biggest one. Location of intercooler and piping, airflow, pressure drop and heat soak all matter.

⚙️ THE FIX IS RARELY JUST A MAGICAL FAN!

Sometimes the solution is a simple bracket, better ducting, improved airflow or changing the position of a component.

Every effort helps in its own way. Some gains are measurable on a dyno or with temperature sensors. Others are improvements you can feel in consistency, reliability and how the engine behaves.

💰 INVESTMENT VS RETURNS

Inconel exhaust components can cost thousands. If that's in your budget, great! But not every build needs the most expensive solution.

Our approach is to look at the simple gains first, then work up the cost scale.

🧠 Understand the heat source.
🔧 Identify what it's affecting.
📈 Measure the problem where possible.
💪 Build a solution that makes sense for your budget.

Because cooling isn't about throwing money at a problem. It's about understanding what the engine needs.

Bolt-On vs Custom — COP — Spark debate 🔥

Anyone can buy parts off the shelf. But where's the fun in that? Lathe, mill, grinder, welder, drill and tap set and we build exactly what they want. 🔧⚡

Example Coil-On-Plug (COP) conversions

COP is cool it cleans up the engine bay and earns bragging rights at meets. 😎 But it's not always the magic upgrade people think it is (not what big hp builds use, not adding HP).

Aftermarket COP kits from many suppliers, but sometimes the smartest option isn't buying a kit at all.

🔥 MIG or TIG? 🔥 Stack some dimes? 🔥 Fabricate your own brackets? 🔥 Drill, tap, sand and paint?

For Gen2 and Gen3 3SGTE owners, adding COP is another modification point to consider but not necessary for everyone.

For Gen4 and Gen5 owners, Toyota already gave us COP—but replacement parts aren't exactly cheap or easy to source. That's where customising makes sense. This setup is modified to run R35 coils ?? Because stronger spark potential, easier availability, and often a better price. 💪

One guy orders a box.
The other creates a solution.

Neither is wrong.

Bolt-on or custom fabrication?
