MEDIA RELEASE

The Premier Must Stop Playing Games

The Premier must stop playing parliamentary games with the future of greyhound racing.

His latest ploy of referring the bill back to the Joint Standing Committee on Greyhound Racing Transition has been rejected by that very committee.

We understand that the committee has unanimously rejected his referral. They believe that it’s up to the Government to answer questions and defend the detail of their own bill and that they should do that in the Legislative Council.

The Premier has been warned that these procedural ploys are causing concern and uncertainty for the many Tasmanians who are involved in greyhound racing. Greyhound racing participants are aware of an increase in anxiety and other mental health issues as a result of these unnecessary delays.

The Premier has no more excuses. The Government should bring the bill before the Legislative Council at the first available opportunity and conclude the debate to allow a decision to be made.

The next sitting week is in late June. This is the last opportunity for the matter to be dealt with before August.

Regardless of the decision of the Legislative Council, this matter needs to be concluded.

If the Premier has any concern at all for the impact of his behaviour on many ordinary Tasmanians, he will bring on the debate.

Any delay beyond June will show that the Premier has no concern for the harm his behaviour is having on many ordinary Tasmanians and their families.

Ben Englund, Greyhounds Tasmania.
