🥾 Hiking in Bowen? A few things to remember before you hit the trails! 🌿
Yesterday, I came across a few people who had become lost on the hiking tracks.
It was a timely reminder that even a beautiful coastal walk can become challenging if you're not prepared.
With the Queensland heat starting to ramp up, it's easy to become dehydrated, tired and disoriented, especially when you're navigating unfamiliar trails.
Bowen's Cape Edgecumbe walking tracks are absolutely beautiful, with incredible coastal views, rocky headlands and hidden bays.
But a little preparation goes a long way towards keeping your adventure safe.
Before you head out,
here's a little hiking checklist to remember:
💧 Take plenty of water.
Don't underestimate how much you'll need in the heat.
☀️ Wear sunscreen and a hat.
The Queensland sun can be brutal, even when there's a breeze.
🥾 Stay on the marked paths.
It's easy to lose your bearings if you wander off the trail, particularly around rocky headlands and unfamiliar bushland.
📍 Tell someone where you're going.
Let them know which track you're walking, who you're with and when you expect to return.
🐍 Watch where you step.
Snakes can be around, particularly in warmer weather. Give wildlife plenty of space and never try to handle or move a snake.
🐜 Keep an eye out for bull ants.
Watch where you're walking and where you stop to rest.
🗑️ Take your rubbish with you.
Everything you carry in should come back out. Let's keep our beautiful coastline clean.
📱 Take your phone, but don't rely on it.
Reception can be patchy, so download a map or familiarise yourself with the route before leaving.
⏰ Know your limits.
Start early to avoid the hottest part of the day, allow plenty of time to return and turn back if conditions become too difficult.
❤️ Look after each other.
If you're visiting Bowen and exploring our beautiful walking trails, please be prepared and check that everyone in your group is coping with the conditions.
The views are worth the walk, but getting home safely is always the most important part of the adventure.
