I inspected an absolute beast of a Landcruiser on Tuesday this week. Having had a lot of new parts thrown at it prior to the sale, such as suspension, brakes, tyres, and a great detail. It came across visually as an excellent car, and with the loud exhaust, made any 4wd enthusiast who jumped in it, smile from ear to ear. However, diving deeper into it, it showed signs everywhere that it had been used for its intended purpose, a capable offroad vehicle. Mud caked around the engine, heavy dirt/dust inside under the dash, and needing a few more mechanical repairs, it could have easily fooled someone not knowing what to look for.
After advising on what some of the repairs would cost, the buyer and seller came to an agreement on a discounted price. A reduction of $5k on initial purchase price. He drove away very happy, all for an inspection fee of $250, including travel to Liverpool from Rose Bay.
Part of what I advised was a fresh start with service history for peace of mind, due to finding a dirty air filter and cabin filter. The next day I was then employed to carry out a complete fluid and filter change, fresh oil, coolant and fuel filter etc.
Next step is to sort out a few more little problems. Most cars with 180,000kms will have something that needs addressing.
