The following has been taken from Allan Whiter's history of Whiter's Southern Motors, published in the Magnet newspaper on 11th October, 2001:
Whiter's Southern Motors was originally founded and operated by Walter Whiter. The business initially began as a well equipped garage in Eden, NSW servicing the many sleeper cutters' trucks and travelling public. During World War II, associated petrol rat
ioning made it necessary to close the business down. At the end of the war, the business was re-opened with a GMH franchise and fully equipped with all the modern equipment required for wheel aligning, brake drum turning, brake shoe servicing, overhead valve servicing, auto-electrical, panel beating, spray painting and under car rust proofing services. A retired pensioner took pride in keeping the floor spotlessly clean, as were the work benches and tools. The business was the training ground for several apprentices, all of whom are in business in the motor industry today. Wally's son John was in charge of a well stocked spare parts department. The tow truck was a new Chevrolet Army body ideally suited for the gravel roads in those days. Whiter's Southern Motors received many commendations for the cleanliness, range of services and quality equipment rarely seen in country garages at that time. Wally retired in 1976 and the business closed. Walter Whiter was my Great Uncle, and I am very pleased to now have the opportunity to apply my own 15 years of mechanical experience under the family business name of Whiter's Southern Motors. We provide an on-site service and specialise in the troubleshooting, repair and servicing of all diesel, 4x4, heavy vehicle and farm/plant equipment.
