...In the early 1960’S, Bruce Walker from Heyfield in Victoria and Col Winton built a plywood and aluminium Hydroplane boat which was powered by a ROLLS ROYCE MERLIN engine. This boat was called THE GLENMAGGIE MONSTER, racing at Glenmaggie over a period of time and eventually was sold to STAN JONES in the late 60’s. It was registered in the Victorian Speedboat Club as VS41 and re-named STAMPEDE, it raced alongside AGGRESSOR and other Unlimited Boats with Bob Saniga and Stan Jones sharing the driving it went on to win the 1970 and 1971 E.C. GRIFFITH Cup, the most prestigious Trophy in Speed Boat Racing.

In 1972 the old STAMPEDE had run its race, it was discarded and a new boat was built........ link to full story below

Throwback Thursday - to Racing in the Swell!

***Offshore Racing Boats build by GILFLITE

This picture was taken by a boating journalist during an offshore race outside Sydney some decades ago.
Picture shows the GILFLITE built offshore boat JAYA run by Colin Pratt in very big swells which were the remains of a major offshore storm. (circa: 1968 ish)

RASCALA another very successful rear engine displacement race boat in its day - Plywood clinker hull designed and built by David Gill - GILFLITE in 1970.

🏁Owned and raced by Bill Baberton.

***Billy Baberton was also on the crew with Stan Jones and Dick Carnie who took the famous hydroplane Bayswater Bulk VS41 to the United States in 1984 to to compete in TEXAS in the BUDWEISER & C.L.E.A.R. UNLIMITED HYDROPLANE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

Bayswater Bulk was designed by Stan Jones and Richard Carnie and built by GILFLITE. It was the first fibreglass hull of it's type in the world.

Bayswater Bulk is now known and raced as Aussie Connection
