Toyo Kogyo (now known as Mazda Motor Corporation) was awarded the rights to build the classic Wankel Rotary Engine back in the 60’s. A Rotary Engine development division was set up and now the rest is history.
The Rotary Engine is a racing icon and has a pedigree thanks to Le Mans and a little closer to home, Mt Panorama at Bathurst.
In 1969, the R100 was launched into the Australian market and its performance definitely exceeded expectation. The RX2 was quickly followed by the RX3, RX4, RX5. The Factory race team developed the RX7 that saw the rotary engine win every Australia Touring car cap other than Bathurst.
Entering the world of drag racing, the Rotary engine has become legendary. Its performance and strength and durability is firmly entrenched in many straight line passes.
