The little automatic Suzuki had come to the end of lease so had to go back. Sadly my boss at the well known driving school only had a brand new Hyundai i30 for me.

Book in quick before he recovers his senses and wants it back.

I took Freya down to Sydney for her jab on Tuesday. She had a play with lots of lorries on the M1 - red lorry, yellow lorry. Max 90/kph for learners makes it exciting from the passenger seat. Keep calm and make early decisions.

A pleasant 2 hour drive down M1 to Sydney Olympic Stadium, I haven’t been there since 22nd Nov 2003.

Very smooth operation getting her Pfizer jab, she was in and out before I finished my meat pie. I am guessing that when driving tests are up and running again they will require all learner drivers to be double vaccinated to be able to take the test.

A quick detour onto the Old Pacific Highway for some bends on the way home - and 2 x 2 hour driving sessions in log book. (She has used all her 3/1)

Just be aware that if you drive over 2 hours you need a 15min break before driving again, Transport NSW will question trips over 2 hours in your log book and may not accept them.

20 to 30% of all serious crashes are attributed to driver fatigue. So break any long drives into 2 hour shifts, have a break - a red bull or coffee doesn’t count.

And please read your log books - parents included - the test is based on the content, and some useful hints, like how to steer!!!

Had a night drive with my very own 16 year old budding Sabine Schmitz this evening.

Started at 6pm (nighttime is getting a little later every day now we are in Springtime).

From Avoca, down through Woy Woy, up the Woy Woy road to Kariong, onto M1 (A good session on M1 at night being overtaken by lots of lorries) off at Sparks Road, Warnervale. Through Toukley and down to Norah Head, along the coast to The Entrance (road works keeping everyone focused) through Long Jetty and finished driving around Terrigal new road system (it isn’t that new) and back over the hill to Avoca.

Good to keep moving and that route covers absolutely everything you could want - and we will probably do it in reverse tomorrow and it is a completely new drive. (There a dozen great 2hr routes around the coast)

P Platers drive at night - don’t cheat those hours - get them to gain real experience on difficult routes and a trip through a drive through for a coffee helps. Radio on, make it as real a P Plate drive as possible.

Instructors can only give 1 hour for 1 hour driving at night, but time it right and you can get 2 day hours and 1 night hour for a 90 minutes drive.

I’m on a short break from the well known Driver Training School as they have shut down lessons due to the Covid lockdowns - predominately in Sydney where they have lots of instructors.

But I’m still able to instruct and I still have a manual and an automatic car but I now have some manoeuvrability on the cost of lessons.

If I were a sensible man (or women) with a daughter (or son) that is learning to drive or wanting a test prep lesson or a refresher lesson I’d send a FB message to John Mac Driving and see how much I could save on a one off lesson - or a batch of 5 or 10 lessons (they can be spread out over several months). I’m thinking it would save me quite a bit of cash.
