Cape York waterfall detour 🌴

Cape York sits at the very top of Far North Queensland and is home to the northernmost point of mainland Australia, known as The Tip.

It is famous for red dirt roads, remote beaches, tropical rainforest, river crossings, waterfalls, fishing, camping, WWII history and big 4WD adventures.

One of the best parts of a Cape York trip is visiting Fruit Bat Falls, Elliot Falls and Twin Falls. These crystal clear, spring fed swimming spots are some of the most beautiful stops on the journey north.

Fruit Bat Falls, Elliot Falls and Twin Falls are the only section of the Old Telegraph Track that Adventure Rentals allows, so you can still experience these incredible Cape York waterfalls without missing out.

For a Cairns to Cairns Cape York itinerary, we recommend allowing around 14 to 21 days. This gives you time to travel safely, enjoy the waterfalls, explore the Cape and not feel rushed on remote roads.

Once your vehicle booking is confirmed, our team can assist with suggested itinerary planning, route notes and campsite ideas.

Cape York is wild, remote and unforgettable. Far North Queensland was made for 4WD travel.

🌊 Water Crossing 101: Make a Splash Without Making a Mess

There is something pretty iconic about a 4WD water crossing in the Top End or Kimberley.

Think Jim Jim Creek in Kakadu, the Pentecost River on the Gibb River Road, or the Reynolds River Track in Litchfield National Park. Stunning? Absolutely. Something to rush? Absolutely not.

Before you dip a tyre in, stop and check the crossing first. Look at the depth, flow, entry and exit points. A good tip is to look for the wet tyre tracks from vehicles that have crossed before you. These usually show the safest entry and exit points, and help you follow the established line rather than guessing your own way through.

At Adventure Rentals, we allow water crossings up to a maximum of 0.5 metres. Even though our vehicles are set up to handle deeper water, the tracks underneath can be rocky, uneven and constantly changing. A marker might show 0.5 metres, but the crossing can dip down to 0.7 metres or more in sections, so it is always important to take it slow and assess properly.

And one very important rule: no salt water crossings are allowed. Salt water and vehicles are not friends.

Once you are ready:

🚙 Select low range 4WD
🐢 Use a slow, steady speed
🌊 Aim to create a gentle bow wave in front of the vehicle
⚙️ Keep momentum consistent and avoid changing gears mid crossing
❄️ Turn your air conditioning and fan off before entering the water
👀 Keep your eyes on your exit point, not the water beside you

The trick is not to charge in like you are auditioning for an action movie. You want a smooth, controlled drive that gently pushes water away from the front of the vehicle.

And remember, just because it is a 4WD does not mean every crossing is a green light. Conditions change quickly across Kakadu, the Gibb River Road, and Litchfield National Park, so always check local advice before heading in.

Adventure is fun. A drowned vehicle is not. 😉

At Adventure Rentals, every depot is more than just a pick up point.

It is the place where our vehicles are checked, prepared, organised and handed over by people who genuinely care about the adventures our customers are about to begin.

In Perth, that person is Viv.

Viv runs our Perth depot and is one of those people who just gets things done. She is incredibly organised, a great communicator, and has the kind of calm, capable energy that makes a busy depot run smoothly. She can jump between operations, customer handovers and reservations support, which makes her an absolute all rounder in our team.

Originally from Bielefeld in Germany, Viv grew up outdoors. Camping trips, family adventures and a love of road trips were part of life from early on. As the second daughter of a serious car enthusiast, it is safe to say a love of vehicles and travel was always in her DNA.

Viv began her career in the automobile industry in Germany before the travel bug well and truly took over. She took a year off to travel around Australia in her own trusty 4x4, and that trip sparked an even deeper love for travel, culture and remote landscapes.

That passion eventually led her to study International Tourism in Ireland before Australia called her back. In 2023, Viv packed her bags and relocated to sunny Perth, Western Australia, and we are very lucky she did.

With a background that blends both the automotive and tourism worlds, Viv brings a huge amount of knowledge, care and attention to our Perth depot. She understands the vehicles, she understands the road trip dream, and she understands just how important it is to send customers off feeling confident and excited.

She is also completely obsessed with Australia’s South West, and after hearing so many wild and wonderful stories from our customers, her own must see list keeps getting longer.

Viv is a huge part of the Adventure Rentals team, helping create safe, smooth and unforgettable adventures from the west coast and beyond.

Big skies, big machines, even bigger adventures.

The Pilbara has a way of making you feel very, very small in the best possible way.

Out here, our 4WDs share the road with road trains, mining trucks and machinery that remind you just how massive this part of Western Australia really is. Mining is a huge part of the region, but so is adventure, open space, red dirt, waterholes and those endless skies that put everything into perspective.

We bet you have heard of Karijini National Park, with Dales Gorge, Circular Pool, Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool. And yes, Karijini absolutely deserves the hype.

But what about the places beyond the usual route?

Looking to escape the crowds? Head deeper into the Pilbara and add these to your map:

Cape Keraudren for remote coastal camping
Millstream Chichester National Park for rock pools, ranges and big Pilbara landscapes
Running Waters campsite for a proper off the beaten track stop and a warm dip
Nullagine for a taste of old gold rush country
Doolena Gorge for red rock, water and wild Pilbara scenery
Glen Herring Gorge for a quiet gorge escape near Marble Bar

If you have already travelled the WA coast and want something different, the Pilbara is the alternate route that delivers.

It is rugged. It is remote. It is beautiful. And it is one of those places that reminds you just how big Australia really is.

Adventure Rentals 4WD camper hire gives you the freedom to explore beyond the coastline and into the heart of the Pilbara.

Some reviews stop us in our tracks.

Pavel and his father Ivo recently hired one of our 4WD campers from Alice Springs and headed out to the Davenport Ranges for a proper outback adventure.

Travelling all the way from the Czech Republic, Pavel has now visited Australia six times, so he knows what makes a good outback vehicle. His verdict? This was the best car they have had.

Easy set up. Smart storage. A practical kitchen. A large 130L upright fridge. Equipment that actually works for remote travel. Most importantly, the vehicle handled the rough terrain without any dramas.

Reviews like this mean a lot to us, especially from travellers who have spent plenty of time exploring the Australian outback.

Thanks Pavel and Ivo for choosing Adventure Rentals and for putting our vehicle to the test in one of the NT’s most underrated 4WD destinations.

No bull, bull bars matter.

Outback travel is beautiful, but it can also be unpredictable.

When you are travelling remote roads across the NT, WA, SA, QLD and beyond, wildlife, cattle and other hazards can appear suddenly. A bull bar adds an extra layer of protection to the front of the vehicle and helps reduce the risk of damage in the event of an animal strike or impact.

It also helps protect important vehicle components, which is especially important when you are a long way from the nearest town, mechanic or phone reception.

For us, safety is not just about the big things. It is about the details that help keep our customers moving, supported and prepared for real outback conditions.

Of course, a bull bar does not replace safe driving. Slow down, avoid driving at dawn, dusk or after dark, and always drive to the conditions.

Meet Drew, the quiet powerhouse behind our Darwin yard.

Drew is our in house diesel mechanic and Operational Manager, an absolute fountain of experience, knowledge and practical 4WD know how.

He has spent more than twenty years working on modified 4WDs and in the heavy road transport industry as a diesel mechanic, so he knows exactly what it takes to keep vehicles performing in tough Australian conditions.

One of our big points of difference at Adventure Rentals is that every vehicle in our fleet comes back through our Darwin depot at least twice a year. This means Drew and our team can check the things that standard mechanics and service centres do not always look for, especially when vehicles spend so much of their time travelling off road.

We use better oils, increase the frequency of preventative maintenance, and keep a very close eye on wear and tear caused by corrugations, dust, water crossings and remote travel.

Drew’s passion is 4WDs. When he is not here working on our vehicles, there is a good chance he is out exploring a new 4WD track somewhere in Australia.

It is this kind of hands on experience that helps keep our fleet adventure ready.

We love it when you Talk Birdy To Us

Australia’s wild birds are something else.

Bright colours, big personalities and very loud lungs to match.

From rainbow lorikeets flashing through the trees, to cheeky cockatoos causing chaos at camp, to galahs looking pretty in pink like they know it, our birdlife brings so much character to a road trip.

They are colourful, curious, noisy, hilarious and sometimes a little too interested in your snacks.

But honestly, waking up to the sounds of the Aussie bush is one of the best parts of camping in Australia.

Wild, loud and full of personality.

Just how we like it.
