Something pretty extraordinary is happening across Australia on 22 July 2028.

A Total Solar Eclipse will sweep from the Kimberley through the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, crossing some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in the country. 🇦🇺

Think Mitchell Falls, the Gibb River Road, Purnululu, Karlu Karlu, the Davenport Ranges, the Simpson Desert and Bourke.

How do you actually plan a 4WD road trip in Australia? 🇦🇺

Not just the dream destinations and incredible photos. The practical stuff that needs to happen first.

We recently worked with Mel and Marcel, who completed an epic Broome to Darwin adventure in one of our Toyota Hilux 4WD Campers.

And they know a thing or two about travelling to Australia from 🇩🇪. This was actually their third Hilux 4WD Camper hire with Adventure Rentals 🙌

Together, we have put together this practical field guide to help you plan your own Australian 4WD road trip.

The starting point is simple:

👋 STAFF SPOTLIGHT | Meet Ben

Originally from Brisbane, Ben started life as a qualified carpenter before doing a bit of roaming, working on stations around Queensland and eventually finding his way to Darwin.

When he arrived in the Top End, he was keen to try something different from carpentry. Then, in true Darwin style, an opportunity popped up. Ben spotted the Adventure Rentals yard, wandered in off the street looking for work and happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time. Very NT. No big plan, just have a crack and see what happens. 🤠

Eighteen months later, Ben has become a big part of our Darwin crew. After learning from Drew, our resident 4WD master, he now builds our vehicles, handles dispatches and returns and knows his way around an Adventure Rentals rig pretty well.

We even managed to drag him back onto the carpentry tools to help build our fantastic new Darwin office. Sorry Ben, there really was no escaping it! 😂

Along the way, he has also caught the 4WD bug and used everything he has learnt to build his own 79 Series Land Cruiser, complete with canopy and all the bells and whistles. We reckon that rig is going to see a few adventures.

Outside work, Ben is a mad soccer fan, has played Men’s A Grade for Mindil Aces here in Darwin and, thanks to his UK roots, is a very loyal Liverpool supporter. ⚽

Now Ben is getting ready for his next adventure and we are going to miss having him around.

Quiet, kind, hardworking and trustworthy, he is one of those people who just gets on with it and gets the job done.

Thanks for everything, Ben. We wish you all the best for whatever comes next and hope that 79 Series takes you on many incredible Australian road trip adventures! 🧡

Planning a remote Aussie outback road trip? Driving off-road across Australia’s vast landscapes is one of the most incredible ways to experience nature, if you know how to handle the track 🚙.

While the views are unforgettable, outback conditions demand respect. Corrugations, soft sand, remote wildlife, and hidden obstacles require a bit of local know-how before you hit the dirt.

1️⃣ Air Down Early
Adjusting tyre pressure on unsealed roads isn't optional, it’s vital. Lowering your PSI increases your tyre’s contact footprint, providing maximum grip on soft surfaces and dramatically smoothing out severe corrugations while protecting against stone punctures.

2️⃣ Respect Dust & Wildlife
Australia's native wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk, it’s best to be safely parked up at camp during these hours. On dirt tracks, always slow down for oncoming vehicles to reduce blind dust clouds and flying rocks.

3️⃣ Engage Low Range Before You Need It
Don’t wait until you lose momentum or get stuck. Engaging Low Range early gives you maximum torque, superior control, and prevents unnecessary strain on the vehicle when tackling steep inclines or soft sand.

4️⃣ Read the Road Ahead
Outback tracks change constantly. Keep your eyes scanning well beyond your bonnet to spot dips, washouts, and exposed gravel early. Smooth steering and steady speeds keep your ride comfortable and safe.

5️⃣ Travel Prepared
Remote travel means self-reliance. Always share your itinerary with a reliable contact, check road reports, and ensure you have proper recovery gear onboard.

🇦🇺 8,500 KM, ONE PRADO AND A WHOLE LOT OF AUSTRALIA 😎

Guido and Anita recently picked up one of our Toyota Prado 4WD Cars in Perth and pointed it north.

Then they just kept going. 😂

8,500 km later, they rolled into Darwin after one seriously epic Aussie road trip through some of the best bits of WA and the NT.

Meet Charlotte, our Reservations Manager and the glue that holds it all together.

Based at our Darwin head office, Charlotte has been part of the Adventure Rentals Team since 2021.

While her official title is Reservations Manager, her role reaches much further. Charlotte keeps a close eye on reservations, supports each of our depots, stays across what is happening operationally and helps make sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

She also works closely with our distribution partners and travel agents, assisting with bookings, answering questions and ensuring their clients receive the same high level of care and support.

Charlotte has an incredible ability to make customers feel welcome, supported and confident about their upcoming adventure. Her calm nature, attention to detail and genuine care make her an invaluable part of our team.

Originally from Victoria, Charlotte grew up with her parents and three older sisters before spending some time in the ACT and eventually making the Northern Territory home. After more than 20 years in Darwin, she has developed a strong connection to the Top End and its incredible landscapes.

Outside of work, Charlotte loves camping, road trips and exploring Australia’s great outdoors. Her perfect campsite includes a crackling bonfire, somewhere to enjoy a refreshing swim and plenty of time to relax in nature.

Quiet by nature but adventurous in spirit, Charlotte brings her love of authentic travel experiences into everything she does.

🚜 Making the grade on the Gibb River Road

Grading works are now underway on the Gibb River Road, progressing from west to east across approximately 470 kilometres of remote gravel road.

Why are dirt roads graded?

Traffic, rain and heat can create corrugations, potholes, loose gravel and uneven surfaces. Grading smooths the road, redistributes gravel, improves drainage and helps make travel safer and more comfortable.

When does grading happen?

In northern Australia, major grading usually begins after the wet season, once roads are open and dry enough for heavy machinery. Extra work may also be needed after heavy rain, flooding or busy travel periods.

Where are roads graded?

Grading takes place on unsealed roads across Australia, from major outback touring routes such as the Gibb River Road to station tracks, national park roads and remote community access roads.

⚠️ Even after grading, road conditions can vary.

🐢 Slow down and drive to the conditions.

👷 Give maintenance crews and machinery plenty of room.

🚧 Reduce your speed and use extreme caution when passing a grader and crews. Watch for dust, loose gravel and changing road surfaces.

Most importantly, always slow down when passing anyone on a dirt road, not just a grader. This includes other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and roadside workers. Reducing your speed helps limit dust, flying stones and poor visibility.

Spare a thought for the poor crew & person in the grader, copping your dust and everyone else’s from both directions.

Slow down, give them room and let them get on with making the Gibb as smooth as a baby’s bum.... well, as smooth as the Gibb gets!

4,650 kilometres in 18 days. Not a bad little Sunday drive! 🚙🌄

David and Simon picked up a Toyota Prado 4WD Camper from our Cairns depot and tackled the Savannah Way through to Darwin.

Their adventure took them through Danbulla in the Atherton Tablelands, Einasleigh, Undara, Cobbold Gorge, Talaroo, Karumba, Normanton, Leichhardt Falls, Boodjamulla National Park at Lawn Hill, Seven Emu Station, Limmen National Park, Bitter Springs, Mataranka, Nitmiluk National Park, Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park.

That is a fair bit of red dirt, plenty of remote camping and some seriously impressive scenery packed into just 18 days.

Their verdict?

“Thanks so much, it was amazing. We can’t wait for our next adventure with you.”

Say hello to Inga, the newest member of our Adventure Rentals team in Adelaide! 👋

Originally from a small town near Hanover in Germany, Inga grew up road tripping around Germany and Europe in her family’s old VW Kombi. So camping, exploring and fitting far too much gear into a small space have been part of her life for as long as she can remember.

After spending three years at high school in Sweden, Inga backpacked through Asia and realised she wanted to turn her love of travel into a career. She trained and worked as a travel consultant, loving helping people plan adventures that suited them perfectly.

In 2020, she arrived in Australia for what was meant to be a two and a half year working holiday. Then an old 4WD became her home on wheels, Australia worked its magic, and the temporary adventure became something a little more permanent. Funny how that happens.

Inga returned to Australia in 2025 and now calls Adelaide home. When she is not helping our customers prepare for their own Aussie adventures, you will usually find her camping in her rooftop tent, searching for quiet beaches around South Australia or heading north to the Flinders Ranges.

With plenty of real road trip experience, a genuine love of camping and a soft spot for hidden gems, Inga is a perfect fit for Adventure Rentals.
