Let’s Talk Roundabouts!!
The usual statement when we start discussing them is,
“my mum and dad said you don’t have to signal to leave a roundabout, it’s not a real road rule and no one does it.”
Australian road law 118 says;
118—Giving a left change of direction signal when leaving a roundabout...
If practicable, a driver driving in a roundabout must give a left change of direction signal when leaving the roundabout.
Offence provision.
So, what does this mean? It means that when going either straight, turning right or doing a U-turn at a roundabout you MUST signal left (you are already signalling left if turning left) as you are leaving to let all other road users, (cars, bikes & pedestrians) know what you are doing. By indicating your intention to leave you are helping with the flow of traffic in all directions.
On the slides below you’ll see where exactly the best place is to signal when leaving a roundabout.
