Do you need an International Driving Permit in Albania?
It depends on where your licence was issued. 🇦🇱

France, Italy and Poland have country-specific guidance recognising the national licence. 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇵🇱

Czech guidance says an IDP is usually not required. Spain requires one with the Spanish licence, while Portuguese drivers may want one as a practical backup.🇨🇿

Check the six-country guide, bring the physical originals and confirm before you fly if your licence format is unusual.

The price you see first is not always the total you pay.

Before renting a car in Albania, follow the booking through with your real dates and extras. Check the office location, read the newest reviews, save the WhatsApp number and photograph the car, interior and dashboard at pickup.

At TIA Rental, there is no deposit, online booking fee or prepayment. You pay at pickup, and the online form does not collect your card details.

Buses in Albania reach every city you want and cost about 40 lek in cash. What they do not have is a live map, a reliable timetable, or a card machine.

The bus is not waiting for the clock, it is waiting to be full. Tirana to Durres runs every 15 to 30 minutes.

Tirana to Saranda runs three or four times a day. Fine for one hop between two cities. Harder when your trip is five stops, luggage and a beach past the last stop.

Landing in Albania? Bring about 50 euros in cash and change the rest in town, not at the airport. ❌

City exchange offices, the ones signed Exchange, take no commission and post the rate on a board outside. Skip the banks, their rates are worse and the queue is for account holders.

And if you are collecting a car with us, you can pay in euro cash or by card, so there is nothing to convert before you drive. 🤝🏼

Filling up in Albania, in three parts. You do not pump it, an attendant does, so stay in the car. 🚘☀️

Petrol is benzine and diesel is nafte, and it is worth knowing which one your car takes before you pull in…and bring cash, because the card machine is not a given, in Tirana either.

Strange bonus fact☄️
Albania sits on one of the biggest onshore oilfields in Europe and still imports almost all its fuel, because the crude is too heavy to make petrol from.

Parking in Tirana is simpler than it looks. Three zones, 100, 40 or 20 lek an hour, and you only pay Monday to Friday between 07:30 and 20:00.

Evenings and weekends the same spaces are free.

Payment happens on your phone through the Tirana Parking app, and it registers against the licence plate, so photograph the plate when you collect your car.

The drive from Tirana to Berat takes roughly two hours. South through Fier on the SH4, then east as the road climbs toward the mountains.

When our customers come back from Berat Albania and return the car at the airport, they almost always say some version of the same thing: the city surprised them more than anywhere else in the country.

Find out why in our blog post at: tiarent.al/blog

Is driving in Albania actually hard?

The honest answer is: not hard, but different. The roads between cities are generally comfortable. The coast road is beautiful but slow. Cities follow a logic of their own. And Google Maps is reliable but will routinely underestimate every drive...

If you travel long enough, you know that you develop a sense when a place is genuinely special versus when it is just well-photographed.

Palasa is the real thing. The white pebbles, the turquoise water graduating to deep Ionian blue, the limestone cliffs dropping straight into the sea on either side, it sits comfortably alongside the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the Mediterranean.

People who have been to Greece, Croatia, and the Amalfi Coast come to Palasa and go quiet for a moment. That reaction is not staged. We see it every summer.

We hand car keys to tourists every day at Tirana International Airport. Before most of them leave our lot, the conversation covers Albania traffic fines, what police look for, what to carry in the car, and what to do if something goes wrong.

This guide draws from the Kodi Rrugor i Republikës së Shqipërisë, Law No. 8378, the official Albanian Road Code, with amendments through 2024. Read it before you drive.
