If you travel long enough, you know that you develop a sense when a place is genuinely special versus when it is just well-photographed.

Palasa is the real thing. The white pebbles, the turquoise water graduating to deep Ionian blue, the limestone cliffs dropping straight into the sea on either side, it sits comfortably alongside the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the Mediterranean.

People who have been to Greece, Croatia, and the Amalfi Coast come to Palasa and go quiet for a moment. That reaction is not staged. We see it every summer.

People who have been to the Albanian Riviera are often surprised when we tell them the north is the better half. The beaches are stunning, but the mountains in the Albanian Alps are what visitors tend to remember longest. Valbona Valley is the reason we say that.

It sits at one end of the Valbona to Theth trail, which is the most talked-about hike in the Balkans right now. Even if you never lace up your hiking boots, the valley alone is worth the drive.

When customers pick up their car from us at Tirana Airport and ask which beaches need a car to reach, Gjipe is the first one we mention.

It is not reachable by public transport in any practical sense. It takes a half-hour drive from Dhërmi along the coast, a rough dirt parking lot, and then a 30-minute hike down to get there. All of that is exactly why it is worth doing.
