Hydrocarbon test or Block test.

This test procedure is used to determine if exhaust emissions are being blown into the cooling system due to a blown head gasket. A positive result would indicate an internal engine concern, such as a blown cylinder head gasket, a cracked cylinder head or a cracked block.

The test relies on a chemical reaction to determine the suspected result. We can determine to some extent the degree of damage internally from the color change of the test fluid. The fluid remains blue if there is a negative result. If the fluid turns yellow, this indicates that there is a high concentration of exhaust gases in the cooling system. This therefore indicates a blown head gasket which is allowing exhaust gases to escape into the water jackets.

Diesel pump removal on any Toyota equipped with 1GD or 2GD engines. (GD6)

To perform this procedure, you need a special service tool. It prevents the diesel pump helix gear from falling when the pump is being removed.

Without this tool, you risk dropping the timing gears in the timing cover which will lead to days of laboring to rectify the issue.

The thermostat regulates engine coolant temperature.

When you first start the car it should be closed, essentially blocking coolant from traversing the radiator thus allowing the engine to reach its optimum temperature as quickly as possible.

Of course, everybody knows that an overheating engine is bad news but most people probably don't realise that engines HATE the cold. A cold engine consumes more fuel.

The faster the engine heats up, the faster the ECM adjusts to the correct air-fuel ratio for maximum performance and fuel efficiency.

As the engine begins to exceed its ideal operating temperature, a valve inside the thermostat expands in such a way that the device is forced open, unblocking the radiator and allowing the water to flow & circulate, ultimately bringing the temperature back down to that sweet spot.

The thermostat continues to expand and contract dynamically in such a fashion, relative to the fluctuating changes in temperature, so as to maintain optimal operating temperature.

The 2024 Toyota Hilux GR Sport.

Even though the 8th-gen Toyota Hilux is now in the twilight of its product lifecycle, it remains a stalwart of the highly competitive leisure doublecab market – and the Hilux GR Sport is its new halo model. As per reports, a new generation of the Hilux is due this year.

Notably, the widebody Hilux GR Sport is 30 mm wider than a standard Hilux, while also standing some 20 mm higher by comparison.

From a mechanical standpoint, the GR Sport’s suspension and braking system have been beefed up. Toyota says new monotube dampers offer better off-road performance than the previous twin-tube units.

As far as engine outputs are concerned, the GR Sport has had a 10% bump in power and torque. The uprated 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel produces peak outputs of 165 kW and 550 Nm of torque compared with the standard 2.8GD-6 engine’s figures of 150 kW and 500 Nm. The transmission is exclusively paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

This is a must buy to Toyota 4×4 loyalists who are looking for a distinctively packaged Hilux with added off-roading capability “fresh from the factory”.
