GOOD DRIVING HABIT: Check engine oil
A safe journey does not begin on the road- it begins with proper vehicle checks.
Before you turn the key, inspect your engine oil. Developing this simple habit can save you from expensive repairs and unexpected breakdowns on the road.
Here are the correct steps to check your engine oil:
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface- This ensures you get an accurate oil level reading.
2. If the engine is running, switch it off, and wait for about 5 to 10 minutes so that the oil drains back into the oil pan.
3. Open the bonnet and locate the oil dipstick.
4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with lint- free cloth.
5. Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again to check the oil level.
6. Read the oil level- The oil level should be between minimum (low) and maximum (full) marks. Ideally, it should be close to the maximum (full) mark without going over.
7. Check the oil condition- Clean oil is usually amber to light brown. If the oil is very black, thick, gritty or has burnt smell, it may be time for an oil change.
8. Top up if necessary- Add only recommended engine oil. Avoid overfilling.
9. Reinsert the dipstick securely and close the bonnet.
