RAIN PERIOD: WASH MY CAR, NECESSARY OR NOT
Introduction
Dilemma as to whether we have to wash our cars during rain periods! Do we assume that rain washes our cars? After all, wash the car and rain comes and spoils our cars again. This article will take us into what really rain is, effects of rain on our cars, ways of countering them and proper recommendations as to whether we should wash cars during such times.
What is rain?
Water in form of vapour gets into the air from reservoirs and forms clouds in the sky. As the vapour accumulates, clouds get darker and darker due to condensation (change from gas to liquid). As water (liquid) becomes heavier than air (gas) air ultimately gets to a stage where it can no longer hold more water (precipitation) and water drips out of clouds down to the ground. It starts to mix with a lot of substances such as nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, dust and many other pollutants. By the time it reaches the ground, it will no longer be water, but rain (a mixture of water and pollutants). If rain’s PH is tested, it is acidic, meaning it is an acid solution since it reacts with a lot of hydrogen and other substances as it falls.
Effects of rain on our cars
Rain is corrosive because of its acidic nature. It causes wearing off of paint though in the long run. It mixes with other dirt particles on the car surface making a tough mixture of a very tough nonsense. Rain causes rust to unpainted underneath parts of our cars; chassis, thyroid ends, drive shafts, brake discs and drums, wheels (rims) etc. Rain causes our cars’ paint to fade out and look dim.
Countering rain on our cars
Washing our cars with soap and clean water soon after every rain session to clear all rain remains from the car. This will neutralise the acidic rain solution.
Not wiping off the rain because we will be cementing the bond between the rain and our paint. At the same time we will be scratching our paint with hardened dust.
Using a high pressure washer will moisten and blow hardened dust off the paint.
Waxing our cars once every week will ensure a protective layer is installed on top of our paint and rain will not get in touch with the paint.
Avoiding dipping our cars in stagnant rain pools will safeguard our underneath parts from corrosion.
Parking our cars in sheds but not under tress will protect our cars from rain.
Conclusion
As seen herein, rain is not, and will never be a friend to a motorist. In fact it is one of the worst enemies. Ensuring our cars play away from rain will assure us of more life to them. Rain is acidic and hence it reacts with our cars’ paint, resulting in corrosion which causes fading out of our paint. It also causes rust on underneath parts. We should avoid rain on our cars by all means; parking them away from rain accessible areas, washing them regularly, not using rain water and waxing our cars more often.
