Tyre wear and performance - What affects them: Driving style – aggressive cornering and braking increases wear
Position – front tyres wear faster because of movement through steering and tyres on driven wheels will wear more quickly
Speed – high speed driving increases temperature and wear
Load – excess load increases wear
Pressure – under inflation (through increased flexing and temperature) and over inflation (through reduced contact area) can both increase wear
Alignment – tyres will wear quickly and unevenly if wheel alignment is wrong of if there is excessive wear in suspension components like shock absorbers

Even Tyres Age: As well as wearing out in use, tyre's degrade naturally through exposure to heat, sunlight (Ultraviolet/UV) and rain. The amount of damage depends on the exposure and the severity of the weather. Check for signs of cracking on the sidewalls of tyre's four or five years old if your car is parked outside and get them replaced if cracking is severe. Damage through ageing is more common with caravans, trailers and other vehicles only used occasionally.

Tyre Life Expectancy: .New tyre's with a tread of 8mm have a lifespan of around 32000km for front wheels, and 64000km for the rear. Purchasing a used tyre between 50% and 75%, 4mm-6mm will give you an average approximate of 20000km for front tyre's and 40000 for rear tyre's.

Know your numbers: A new tyre begins life at a depth of 8mm. The legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, however this is extremely unsafe as the vehicle will easily coast on sandy or wet roads, providing minimal grip. Performance, particularly wet grip, gets worse as the tread wears. This is more marked as the tyre wears below 3mm of tread and approaches the legal limit. Check tread depth more often once it gets down to 3mm and aim to replace tyre's before the tread wears below 2mm. This is more important as autumn and winter approach – better new tyre's now than struggle through the cold and wet with tyre's approaching the legal minimum tread depth.

Our used tyre's are between 50% and 75%, 4mm-6mm tread of a new tyre, and cost less than half of a new tyre purchase. This approach to safety is much more cost effective and safer, as a new set of tyre's can be an extremely expensive exercise. This solution allows the driver to transition to a safer position at a fraction of the cost.
