We’re heading to Bonniedale Wilderness Ranch on 31 October 2026 for a guided night drive with EcoTrek 4x4 and Vastrap 4x4 Club.

Bonniedale is rated as one of South Africa’s Top 10 4x4 trails, and doing it after dark should make for a very different experience.

Made an oopsie yesterday, I was supposed to rescue a stuck Hyundai minibus but then needed rescuing myself. Instead of driving to the bottom of the gorge I decided to try and do a u-turn at an old farm gate, unfortunately didn't realise how wet it was and got the Mahindra seriously stuck, lesson learned, don't be lazy🤣

Thankfully having two 4x4s at home has its advantages and we were able to fetch the Landtrek to recover the Mahindra.

4x4 Training in the Garden Route!

I’ve got a few people asking lately about the training we do at EcoTrek 4x4, so I thought I’d share some photos from recent training days.

The focus of our training is not just getting a vehicle through an obstacle. I want the driver to understand what the vehicle is doing, why it is doing it, and how to use the systems fitted to that specific 4x4 properly.

We cover things like line selection, wheel placement, low range, diff locks, traction control, throttle and brake control, vehicle angles, tyre pressures, recoveries and how different vehicles react in different terrain.

We also run dedicated sand training, where we spend a lot of time on tyre pressures, momentum, gear selection, reading the terrain and understanding how the vehicle behaves when traction is limited.

A big part of the training is vehicle specific. A Fortuner, Jimny, Ranger, Mahindra, D-Max, Hilux etc. don't all behave the same way, and I don't believe they should all be taught exactly the same way either.

1-day Technical or Sand Driver Systems — from R5 999 per vehicle
Up to 2 drivers.

2-day Technical + Sand Driver Systems — from R14 999 per vehicle up to 2 drivers
Includes accommodation and meals for 2 people for 2 days.

Training takes place at our dedicated training facility and practical trail driving takes place at Bonnidale wilderness ranch or Vleesbaai.

For your peace of mind, I’m an accredited instructor on unit standards US254154 and US254135 with 20 years of off road driving experience.

Great example of the difference a better line choice can make, in the first attempt I was to far to the right and my right front wheel got stuck in a rut before a rock, second attempt was much better with all 4 wheels on a more even track.
