Right...

Let's settle this once and for all.

If you've ever been to the Vaal...

Harties...

Roodeplaat...

Or literally any dam in South Africa...

You've seen one.

Maybe ten.

Actually...

Probably about fifty.

The Toyota Hilux of South African boating.

Every oke knows one.

Every oke has an opinion.

And every second uncle reckons his "still does 100 with a 125 Mariner."

Ja boet...

Sure it does.

Then your cousin's mate's brother apparently had one that did 140 uphill into a headwind while towing two tubes and a jet ski.

Boaters are full of s**t.

And I absolutely love it.

But here's the thing...

For a boat that's become such a massive part of South African boating...

Almost nobody actually knows where it came from.

So crack open another beer...

Tell the wife you'll mow the lawn tomorrow...

And let's get into it.

This story doesn't start in some fancy factory.

It doesn't start with investors.

Or some oke winning the Lotto.

It starts with two twin brothers.

Riaan and Andre van Helsdingen.

Both dyslexic.

Both left school in Standard 7.

And according to them...

There were plenty of people who reckoned they were wasting their time.

Now let's be honest.

Most people would've listened.

Gone to get a normal job.

Worked until retirement.

Complained about Mondays for forty years.

Not these two.

They basically looked at everyone...

Shrugged...

And said...

"Ag shame."

With hardly any money...

They borrowed a welding machine.

Not bought.

Borrowed.

Dragged it underneath a tree.

And started building.

No air-conditioned workshop.

No coffee machine with fourteen different settings.

No reception area with fake plants.

Just two okes...

One welder...

And enough determination to embarrass half the motivational speakers on LinkedIn.

Funny how life works hey.

The people who said they'd never make it...

Probably own one now.

Now here's where the story gets lekker.

Before they ever built a boat...

They built trailers.

Twin Trailers.

Back in 1992.

Now I know...

Trailers aren't exactly sexy.

Nobody walks around saying...

"Tjom...

Have you seen Piet's new galvanised V-frame?"

But think about it.

Without the trailer...

Your R2 million boat is basically just expensive garden furniture.

Thousands of trailers later...

These okes understood things most boat builders didn't.

Weight.

Balance.

Strength.

How to stop your trailer trying to overtake your Hilux at 120 km/h because you packed the cooler box like an absolute chop.

Every South African boater has seen it.

Boat starts wagging.

Driver starts sweating.

Passenger suddenly becomes religious.

The trailer starts doing the cha-cha behind the bakkie.

Not ideal.

Building trailers first meant they understood boats before they even built one.

Which is actually pretty bloody clever.

Eventually...

The disease got them.

Boat disease.

And unfortunately...

There's no cure.

Ask any boat owner.

You'll spend R250,000 on motors...

R30,000 on electronics...

R15,000 on fuel...

Then complain that tomatoes are too expensive.

Anyway...

The brothers decided it was time.

They'd built enough trailers.

Now they wanted to build what sat on top.

The first Sensation boats weren't trying to compete with million-rand offshore machines.

They were built for South Africans.

Real South Africans.

Take the family out.

Pull the kids on tubes.

Teach the youngster how to ski.

Anchor somewhere.

Burn wors.

Drink beers.

Accidentally leave the plug out once.

Panic.

Realise the boat's fine.

Pretend that never happened.

We've all got that one mate.

If you say you don't...

It's probably you.

Then came the boat.

The one that everybody knows.

The 21 Offshore.

If South African boats had celebrities...

This would've been Brad Pitt.

Everywhere.

Fishing competitions.

Holiday houses.

Launch sites.

Facebook Marketplace.

Your mate's cousin's uncle had one.

The oke down the road had one.

Your fishing buddy nearly bought one.

They became so common that half the country probably learnt to reverse a trailer behind one.

And that's because it simply worked.

It wasn't trying to reinvent boating.

It wasn't covered in unnecessary nonsense.

It just did exactly what people wanted.

Go fishing.

Bring the family.

Handle rough water.

Come home.

Repeat next weekend.

Sometimes simple wins.

Now this part is actually cool.

Instead of getting some influencer who can't even tie a bowline...

Sensation worked with Bok van Blerk.

And if you've followed Bok long enough...

You'll know the oke actually fishes.

Properly.

Not the Instagram version where someone holds the fish for five seconds before going back to the lodge.

The result was the CaBrito.

A proper fishing machine.

Big deck.

Twin motors.

Serious offshore capability.

Enough space that your mate can't blame you for tangling his line every five minutes.

Although...

Let's be honest...

He'll still find a way.

Now while everyone else was busy measuring top speed with three people, half a tank of fuel and the wind behind them...

Sensation quietly changed how they built boats.

Vacuum infusion.

Basically...

Instead of drowning the fibreglass in resin like your uncle drowning his steak in Mrs Ball's...

Everything gets pulled together under vacuum.

Stronger.

Lighter.

More consistent.

Less wasted material.

It's not sexy.

It doesn't make cool noises.

It doesn't add horsepower.

But it's the kind of thing that matters fifteen years later when your hull is still solid and your mate's boat sounds like Rice Krispies every time it hits a wave.

Sensation also says they were the first South African builder to use it...

And the first to offer a lifetime hull warranty because of it.

I couldn't independently verify that...

So don't moer me in the comments.

I'm simply telling you what they claim.

Here's what I actually think.

Sensation didn't become popular because they built the fastest boat.

Or the prettiest boat.

Or the most expensive boat.

They became popular because they built boats for normal okes.

The oke working all year to buy one.

The family saving for holidays.

The fisherman who wanted something reliable.

The dad teaching his laaitie to ski.

Those memories are worth a hell of a lot more than another five kilometres an hour.

Alright...

Helmets on.

Because I know exactly what's about to happen.

The Panache brigade are already warming up their keyboards.

The Odyssey guys are typing in CAPS.

Someone's about to mention Benguela.

And there's definitely one oke who's going to comment...

"My 1987 home-built plywood duck with a 40 Mariner still leaves all of these."

Good for you, Willem.

Now let the rest of us argue.

Who's owned a Sensation?

Who's still got one?

Who's still crying because they sold theirs?

And...

Which South African boat brand do you honestly think deserves the GOAT title?

Let's hear it.

This should be entertaining...
