The first time we saw Skeurklip almost a year ago, we knew we had to come back.

This time around it did not disappoint. On our way many of our colleagues, friends and family told us to turn around and kept sending us the weather report and photos of the snow in the surrounding areas.

As we turned off from Memel we were quick to realise that we are heading towards the snow.

We headed up a snow filled . Made some stops, built a snowperson ⛄️ and threw each other with snowballs.

We had a muddy , but in general much better condition than what we found it last year. A serious effort was done in road maintenance.

To describe the scenery would not do it justice, we can only recommend that you go and see it yourselves.

After another muddy Collin’s pass we arrived at Camp Skeurklip! Again a lot of effort was out into the road maintenance… however it was the least of our challenges. Everything was under the snow. The sun went down hours ago and we still needed to pitch our tents…

In the end we found a nice place where we had set up and we stuck it through.

There’s nothing like arriving at a campsite in the night and waking up to a view you did not see when you arrived.

We set out to hike to Skeurklip, and after a steep and windy hike we made it.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve

What a gem, the Nature Reserve was showing off with plenty of buffalo!

We recorded our trip on Gaia maps, which should give you a good idea of time you need to allow, depending on where you want to go.

Modimole, Alma, Loubad, Vaalwater, Rankin’s Pass…

If you want to go out for gravel road and scenery, we suggest taking the Modimole road through to Vaalwater and then taking a the Elandsfontein gravel road. At any intersection you can turn back to Bela Bela, or explore other gravel roads. After the recent rainfall these roads are muddy, and some of it has washed away.

Today we went exploring around . We decided to drive the and it did not disappoint. The pass had a myriad of terrain changes, from rocky and pebble sections straight into soft and saturated sand and mud. We kept the tyre pressure to 1.5bar and it held really well.

There is a section of road once you have gone through Bakker’s pass and turn towards Alpetra Nature Reserve where the road was in a bad condition just before you get to the Nature Reserve. The outside of the tyre tread ran 2-3cm wider than the available surface with a metre or two drop on each side. Compliments to the co-driver it takes some real good directing skills over that soft sand where the sides already collapsed.

In wet conditions you need to take extra precautions and stay aware of the road conditions.
