π Quick Vehicle-Finance Qualification
1. Start with net monthly income
As a broad screening rule, aim to keep the proposed vehicle instalment around 15β20% of net income, although the actual lender affordability assessment can be different.
Example:
Net income: R25,000
Target vehicle instalment: approximately R3,750βR5,000
Depending on interest rate, term and deposit, this could support a vehicle in roughly the R200,000βR280,000 range.
2. Check existing commitments
Calculate:
Net income β existing debt repayments β living expenses = available income
A customer earning R30,000 but already paying R15,000 in loans and other commitments may have considerably less borrowing capacity than someone earning R25,000 with minimal debt.
3. Consider the credit profile
For your customer screening:
700+ β Strong profile
650β699 β Generally good
600β649 β Proceed cautiously
Below 600 β Finance may be challenging
But never promise approval based on the score alone.
4. Add the deposit
For example:
Vehicle: R250,000
Deposit: R50,000
Amount financed: R200,000
The deposit can improve affordability and reduce the lender's exposure.
