This past weekend we attended our last drag racing event of the season. As we said goodbye, it was bittersweet. The cars and the team are ready for a rest, but we will miss the outstanding competitors, the amazing volunteers and our wonderful friends.
The final weekend did not disappoint. Central Alberta Raceways hosted the last Al Williams Memorial Weekend, future years it will known as the Memorial Weekend. The car count was high and the weather was amazing.
Saturday
Dev ended up seeded second and was making great lights. He found his way into the finals. Unfortunately he did not get the win and ended up second.
Avery's car gave us a scare to start the weekend. She warmed up in the pits, and drove down to the staging area and everything was fine. She fired up to pull into the burnout box and she quickly shut it down because the car sounded funny. After trying to fire a couple of times Carl initial diagnosis was the car ran out of fuel and went lean. He pulled the car back to the pits. While he came up to help Dev make his first pass, Avery pulled off the valve covers so he could take a look. Turns out she had broken another rocker stud, even with the girdle. Thankfully, Carl had some brand new studs in the trailer and he had the car back up and running before the second round of qualifiers. Her car ran well for the rest of the day. The win light still eluded her and she slept on the tree with a 0.086 reaction time.
Sunday
Dev was a tad bit off on Sunday and was struggling with some red lights.
Avery was unable to race so Carl decided to try his hand at running Nightmare. It was definitely a tight squeeze, but he made it work. His first pass out he ran a 5.10, with an 0.8 second light. He realized he had taken his finger off the button too late and had no choice but to sit and watch the green light until the car launched. Carl has asked Avery many times how the launch feels. Is it fast? Does is suck you back? Her response it always, "Meh, it's OK." Well, apparently it pulls you back into the seat and it sucks you back again when it shifts into second. Carl made consistent passes all day and red light in round one of eliminations. He was not too disappointed, because it was super uncomfortable to squeeze into her car. It was worth his moments of discomfort as he got a first hand account of how her car runs.
Monday
Avery was back in Nightmare. Her first pass out was a little slow. She only ran 5.18 sec. She was eliminated in round 1 with a red light and a break out. After her last pass Carl gave her full carbs off the starting line to see what it would do. It did not hook up and she still ran only a 5.07 sec.
Dev was back in better form on Monday and made it to the finals. He again placed second. Zoe beat him on the tree and he broke out.
We learned so much this year and I know the learning will continue over the off season.
Thank you to our sponsors. Your contributions helped to make this our best season ever.
