In 1979, Elvita Adams, 29, jumped from the 86th-floor observation deck of the Empire State Building and survived. However, she didn't fall all the way to the ground. A gust of wind broke her fall, and she landed about 20 feet down on the 3-foot-wide ledge of the floor directly below.

Below is the news story from 1979 https://www.nytimes.com/1979/12/03/archives/woman-survives-fall-at-the-empire-state.html

"A 29‐year‐old woman apparently jumped from the 86th‐floor observation deck of the Empire State Building last night, but survived when she landed on a three‐foot ledge about 20 feet below, the police said. She was admitted to Bellevue Hospital with a fractured pelvis.

Authorities at the 102‐story building on West 34th Street theorized that strong wind gusts — and no small amount of luck — saved the life of Elvita Adams, of 975 Walton Avenue in the Bronx.

George Reice, night supervisor at the observatory, said that a guard heard calls for help at about 8:15 last night and found Miss Adams lying on the 85th‐floor ledge of the building.

A spokesman for the building said that ordinarily four guards patrol the 86th‐floor observation deck, which is surrounded by an eight‐foot, ironspiked fence. But, the police said, no one saw Miss Adams jump. The police said they were considering the incident an attempted su***de."

The United States is projected to collapse near the absolute bottom of the developed world for life expectancy by 2030—falling behind even Croatia and Mexico—according to an ensemble of 21 probabilistic forecasting models that point to high rates of chronic disease and unequal healthcare access as the primary drivers pulling the national average down

The study found that the United States had “some of the lowest projected life expectancy gains” among all 35 industrialised countries studied. Among nations expected to make minimal progress, the US sat alongside Sweden, Japan, Greece, Macedonia, and Serbia — but unlike those countries, it was starting from a substantially lower base.

The specific 2030 projections for the US were 83.3 years for women and 79.5 years for men. Those numbers placed America roughly on par with the Czech Republic for men, and Croatia and Mexico for women. By contrast, South Korean women were projected at over 90 years; French, Spanish, and Japanese women all above 88.

The paper was unusually direct about the causes, particularly given the typical neutrality of medical journals. It identified the United States as “the only country in the OECD without universal health coverage” and noted that the US has “the largest share of unmet health-care needs due to financial costs.” It cited high and rising health inequalities, persistent obesity and chronic disease, high homicide rates, and stagnant or declining life expectancy among some American subgroups.

In February 2017, a team of researchers from Imperial College London and the World Health Organization published one of the most rigorous life expectancy forecasts ever attempted. Rather than rely on a single statistical model, the team built an ensemble of 21 different probabilistic forecasting mod...
