Happy Wednesday, ocean lovers! Let’s make a splash with some FUN FACTS!

😴 HALF-ASLEEP, STILL ON DUTY! Dolphins rest one half of their brain at a time, allowing them to keep breathing and stay alert.

📣 A NAME WITH A WHISTLE! Bottlenose dolphins develop distinctive “signature whistles” that help them identify one another. Their version of “Hey, it’s me!”

🖤 BIG FAMILY CONNECTION! Orcas—also called killer whales—are the largest members of the dolphin family!

🔊 NATURE’S SONAR! Dolphins send out clicks and listen to the returning echoes to help locate prey and explore their surroundings.

🦷 ALL THOSE TEETH… BUT NO CHEWING! Bottlenose dolphins use their teeth to grip prey and usually swallow fish whole!

🐟 SEAFOOD LOVERS! Fish, squid and crustaceans are on the bottlenose dolphin menu.

👯 AN EVER-CHANGING OCEAN CREW! Their social groups can split up and come back together.

🐡 FACT OR FISHY STORY? Dolphins have been filmed mouthing and passing pufferfish around. The claim that they’re deliberately “getting a buzz” hasn’t been scientifically confirmed!

Our Saltwater Taffy crew gets lucky with wild dolphin encounters a few times a year here in the US Virgin Islands. Unexpected, never guaranteed and always unforgettable!

And when dolphins choose to hang out nearby while we’re snorkeling… enjoy the moment! Stay calm, give them plenty of space, and let them decide how close they want to get ~ even when their curiosity brings them right to you. Never chase, feed, or touch them. Simply float, observe, and let them come and go freely. They’re wild animals, and sometimes incredibly curious ones! There’s something extra special about experiencing wildlife on their terms. What a magical world we get to explore! 😎🤿🗺️🫶🇻🇮

YAY for our MVP, Bosun the Sailing Cat!!! 😻⛵️

Our little rescue boy has officially been selected to be featured in the 2027 Caribbean Pet Calendar, alongside a whole crew of adorable winners! 🐾🥳

We love supporting animals here in the USVI and throughout the islands, so being part of a calendar that helps raise funds for the Carriacou Animal Hospital makes this extra special to us.

Did you know we LOVE Carriacou?! 🇬🇩❤️ Over the past decade, we’ve shared so many family adventures there aboard Saltwater Taffy ~ tackling boat projects in the shipyard Carriacou LTD, making friends, BBQs, cruising as a family, hiking, beaching, diving, visits to the animal hospital and overall creating pretty incredible BestDayEver memories as a family during many off seasons!

Good morning, sunshines! ☀️💙 And good day if you’re catching up on this post later today! Either way… Happy Monday! 🌴⛵️

Let’s talk about our friend, the Caribbean octopus! 🐙💙

We absolutely LOVE these incredible creatures! 😍 There’s something so special about coming across an octopus while we’re snorkeling~especially when they decide to hang out and give us a little underwater show!

And did you know… 🤯🐙

🧠 Octopuses are incredibly intelligent. They can solve puzzles, learn through observation, remember solutions, and even recognize individual people!

👀 They have THREE hearts! Two pump blood to their gills, while the third pumps blood to the rest of their body. ❤️❤️❤️

🩸 Their blood is blue! They use a copper-based protein called hemocyanin to carry oxygen through their bodies.

🎨 They’re masters of disguise. Octopuses can rapidly change their color, patterns AND skin texture to blend into their surroundings or communicate. So look closely… they might be right in front of you! 👀🐙

💪 Their arms are seriously wild! Each arm contains a complex network of neurons that helps it process information and respond to its surroundings, giving the arms an incredible amount of independence from the brain. And fun fact… their arms are often called tentacles, too! 😎🐙💪

🌀 And those suckers?! They aren’t just for grabbing things. They contain sensory receptors that help an octopus literally taste and feel what it touches!

Basically… an octopus is an underwater genius, contortionist, artist AND escape artist all rolled into one. 😂🐙

We could watch these amazing animals all day long! 💙🌊 They never cease to amaze us, and every encounter feels like a little gift from the ocean.
