The EP3 was the Type R America never got, which is a shame, because some might say it was the coolest one 🏎️

Some might also say it looks like a sorta goofy little hatchback, but make no mistake, these things are serious.

Equipped with a K20, 6-speed, dash-mounted shifter, and good 'ol VTEC to bring it all home. Not to mention, the JDM spec added an L*D, close-ratio gearbox, and Recaros from the factory. No turbo, no problem, just a naturally aspirated K20 doing it's thing.

So then, the question is, are you pulling the trigger?

The Evo IV doesn't get nearly enough credit.

Everyone talks about the VI TME, the VIII RS, the IX MR, and who could blame them. However, the IV is the one that quietly rewrote the rulebook while everyone else was sleeping on it.

This is the car that introduced AYC (Active Yaw Control) for the first time on any production Evo, which meant torque vectoring to the rear wheels before most people even knew that was a thing. It also got the first twin scroll turbo in the lineup, which punched up low and mid-range response in a way the previous cars just couldn't touch. On top of all of that, Mitsubishi rotated the entire engine and drivetrain 180° to drop the center of gravity and finally kill the torque steer the earlier cars were known for.

Is it the most refined Evo? No. The V and VI cleaned up some rough edges, and the IX is probably the closest they ever got to a "luxury" feel (using that term VERY lightly 😂). But the IV laid every foundation those cars were built on, and you can still find one without remortgaging your house.

Underrated? Yeah. We think so.

If what we said isn't enough evidence for you, enjoy this incredible IV build owned by for your consideration 🤝

Not many things can kill an engine as fast as exccessive oil temps, and we are not alone in finding that the stock Civic 11th gen system is not up to the task.

When it came time to design the 11th gen Civic Si Oil Cooler kit we were not happy with any of the filter sandwich plates on the market, as they all spaced the oil filter so far down that it became the lowest point on the car. In doing so it would no longer clear the factory under-tray, causing you to either have to trim it, or space it. With that in mind, we designed our two-piece filter adapter to not only fit as we would like, but also to function perfectly providing nearly zero restrictions or pressure drop in the system. Due to the lack of factory oil pressure monitoring, we felt it was very important to add the 1/8" NPT port to the side of the housing, as to provide the key information of oil temperature, pressure, or both.

To mount the cooler, we designed our MAPerformance 304 Stainless mounting bracket to keep the installation as easy as can be! 🤝

For the cooler, we selected one of the largest Mocal cores that we could fit, and keep in a reasonable budget. Mocal has been an industry leader in the cooling industry for generations. There were multiple reasons for this decision, the obvious being that it would pull as much heat out of the system as possible and cool the oil to reasonable temperatures. The secondary reasoning is that the L15CA has a very small oil capacity and being able to add nearly a full quart to the system will help in both temperature and also help keep the oil pressure stable at all times!

To round it all off, the lines we choose to use are lightweight braided hose for easy handling and serviceability.

Jackie Chan is a huge Evo and Mitsu guy, did you know that?

So huge in fact, that he was granted an official "Jackie Chan Special Edition Evo IX". When we say official, we mean Mitsubishi actually partnered with Jackie and Ralliart to produce 50 Jackie Chan edition cars, legitimately.

This edition featured a long list of cosmetic changes and upgrades such as badges, trim pieces, and other details that were inspired and designed by Jackie himself.

The best part of all of this is, he didn't just keep the car as some sort of lawn ornament. He drove it all the time!

Pretty cool, don't you think?

You've probably seen all of these trims mentioned somewhere, and if you want to know what they mean, we've got you covered.

While this doesn't cover every single detail, it's enough to get you on the right track 🤝

V-Spec: "Victory Specification"

A performance based trim aimed at general upgrades over the base model R34 GTR.

+ ATTESA E-TS Pro AWD system
+ Electronically controlled active L*D
+ Aero and suspension upgrades
+ Added gauge readouts on the center digital screen

V-Spec II: A refresh of the original "V-Spec" trim level.

+ Carbon hood with NACA duct
+ Upgraded rear brakes
+ Interior upholstery updates and aluminum pedals

M-Spec: "Mizuno Spec"

Named after Nissan's chief engineer, Kazutoshi Mizuno. The M spec prioritizes comfort and daily drivability over pure performance.

+ "Ripple Control" (comfort) shock absorbers
+ Proprietary rear sway bar
+ Leather interior with heated front seats

N1: A stripped, special lightweight trim focused on racing applications out of the box.

+ Removes A/C, audio, rear wiper, trunk carpet, and thinner factory paint
+ Revised engine construction and upgraded turbochargers

V-Spec II Nür and M-Spec Nür: The Nür is for Nürburgring 🏁

Named after the world famous racetrack we all know and love, these models were the final units ever produced, and acted as a send off for the platform.

+ Similar engine from the N1 R34
+ Gold valve cover
+ 300 km/h speedometer
+ Gold VIN plate
+ Millenium Jade paint option

Z Tune: The ultimate performance spec, built by Nismo after factory production had come to an end.

+ Hand rebuilt from the ground up. Nismo purchased these cars from Nissan, stripped them, and rebuilt them from scratch
+ Rebuilt factory engine rated to 500 horsepower
+ Custom carbon fiber body kit (including the famous Z tune hood we all love)

So now that you know, which one would you choose?

There won't be a Prelude Type R after all, but we think that's a good thing.

While the reasons for this decision from Honda appear to come from a sensible and financial place, we think the decision transcends way beyond the numbers.

The Type R badge is nothing short of sacred, and reserved for the most prestigious and focused platforms Honda can produce. That means you can't just add some driver modes, stick on carbon pieces, slap on a Type R logo and call it good. The badge must be earned, and at this stage, would mean a total redesign of the Prelude from the ground up.

With the current Type R lineup taken into consideration; the FK8, FL5 and even the Integra Type S, introducing another direct competitor to these cars just doesn't make a ton of sense. A Prelude Type R would have to (at a minimum) meet the performance benchmarks of the current cars, but more likely, would need to exceed them. This puts the Honda lineup in an extremely awkward spot, and would probably leave everyone confused as to what to do next.

Instead of doing this, introducing the Prelude as a sporty "lesser tier" option seems more sensible. Doing it this way adds focus and value to Honda as a modern "fun car" brand. Now, with the Prelude, you don't need to make a jump from something like a Civic Si all the way to an FL5 Type R, or Integra Type S. If you're somewhere in the middle, or looking for a different experience all together, that's where the Prelude comes in.

Although it's caught some heat from the community since it's announcement, reserving the Type R badge does the Prelude a ton of favors as a car someone might actually want to buy.

Enough about what we think though, what about all of you? Are you with us, or would you prefer to see a Type R variant?

A short time ago, we caught up with a fine gentleman named Damian after his wonderfully built Evo VIII caught our eye 🏎️

We could not resist getting the full details on the build, as well as snap a few photos in the process. That said, the modification list is literally a mile long, and we can't actually fit it all in one post. So, instead, we have a "back of the book" version for you all.

Big thank you to Damian for his time, and for building such a killer car 🤝

Check this thing out!
