There won't be a Prelude Type R after all, but we think that's a good thing.
While the reasons for this decision from Honda appear to come from a sensible and financial place, we think the decision transcends way beyond the numbers.
The Type R badge is nothing short of sacred, and reserved for the most prestigious and focused platforms Honda can produce. That means you can't just add some driver modes, stick on carbon pieces, slap on a Type R logo and call it good. The badge must be earned, and at this stage, would mean a total redesign of the Prelude from the ground up.
With the current Type R lineup taken into consideration; the FK8, FL5 and even the Integra Type S, introducing another direct competitor to these cars just doesn't make a ton of sense. A Prelude Type R would have to (at a minimum) meet the performance benchmarks of the current cars, but more likely, would need to exceed them. This puts the Honda lineup in an extremely awkward spot, and would probably leave everyone confused as to what to do next.
Instead of doing this, introducing the Prelude as a sporty "lesser tier" option seems more sensible. Doing it this way adds focus and value to Honda as a modern "fun car" brand. Now, with the Prelude, you don't need to make a jump from something like a Civic Si all the way to an FL5 Type R, or Integra Type S. If you're somewhere in the middle, or looking for a different experience all together, that's where the Prelude comes in.
Although it's caught some heat from the community since it's announcement, reserving the Type R badge does the Prelude a ton of favors as a car someone might actually want to buy.
Enough about what we think though, what about all of you? Are you with us, or would you prefer to see a Type R variant?
