I think I have owned 4 or 5 Yamaha R6 in my life, as well as my first Yamaha, an ‘89 FZR600. The bulk of my track days since the 90s were spent on an R6. My best lap times have been on an R6.

Things I loved about all of them:
Screaming, revvy motors with high redlines. Agile, lightweight handling. The looks. Reliable and FUN! The YCC-I introduced in 2008 was a game changer!

Things I didn’t like so much (in hindsight):
Not very comfortable. A lot of weight on the wrists. Buzzy on the freeway. So much plastic.

Small Bikes = Big Fun

A lot of new riders think they need the biggest and fastest bike they can afford. Maybe it’s machismo and they want the visual street cred or they don’t know any better. They’re then surprised when a rider on a smaller less powerful motorcycle leaves them in a few turns. Learning something new is hard when you’re intimidated by the weight and power of it. Confidence comes easily when you feel at ease in controlling a machine that can easily kill you. If you’re a new rider looking to get better, nab a sub 500cc sport bike and head to the track. You’ll learn more in one day than you ever will trying to tame a liter bike in the hills. You’ll also save $$$ and maybe collect a few scalps 🤙🏼
