Your car can tell you a lot before a warning light ever comes on, and sometimes the first clue is a smell.
While some odors are harmless, others can signal overheating, leaks, or wear that should not be ignored.
Here are 5 common car smells and what they usually mean:
π₯ Burnt plastic or burnt toast
Often caused by overheating transmission fluid, electrical components, or belts that are wearing out.
π¬ Sweet smell
Usually a sign of coolant leaking from the radiator, hoses, or cooling system.
π’οΈ Burning oil smell
Oil may be leaking onto hot engine parts and burning off while you drive.
π₯ Rotten egg smell
Can indicate a failing catalytic converter or fuel system issue.
β½ Strong gasoline smell
May point to a fuel leak or issue within the fuel system that should be checked as soon as possible.
Most drivers wait until a smell becomes stronger or a warning light appears. The reality is that unusual smells are often one of the earliest warning signs your vehicle gives you.
