In the late 1970s, I grew up standing in the 3 hour lines to get pizza. It was so cool back then, because after standing in lines that wrapped around the block on a weekend night - you entered through this GRAND front door that resembled the opening of a wooden organ pipe. This was the Organ Grinder and has a cult following of nostalgia today in my hometown of Denver. As you continued through the line, you were actually walking THROUGH, and standing INSIDE the organ. Yes, you were 2 feet from the 32 foot tall pipe, resonating the air inside your lungs, and you could hear nothing of conversations with your parents. The restaurant was nothing but glass on the front and it was not only the customers seeing every inch of those pipes, every driver along Alameda Avenue saw INTO the organ. Pipes were on display - in a big way. Altho the Organ Grinder is no longer in business, I am so grateful that this magnificent, largest Wurlitzer organ ever produced (only 3 years after my antique Stude - See how I related it to this page?), in 1927, was dismantled and sent to Mesa Arizona where they built a new home for it, and is still being played today. Tonight even. And that is why we are asking all of you to turn out. The instrument I was fascinated with at 12 years of age is still billowing out the woosh of air from those massive wooden pipes 99 years later.
