While most people were looking for shade today, Mike was under the hood tackling an engine replacement. This one came to us after a backyard mechanic project that never quite made it to the finish line—along with a couple buckets full of parts.

Many customers ask, "Can my tire be patched?" The answer depends on where the damage is located and how severe it is.

✅ Generally Repairable
A tire can usually be repaired if:
The puncture is in the center tread area
The hole is 1/4 inch (6mm) or smaller
The tire has not been driven while completely flat
There is only one repairable puncture in that area

Example: A nail in the middle of the tread is often repairable with a proper patch/plug combination.

❌ Generally Non-Repairable
A tire should be replaced if:
The puncture is in the sidewall
The damage is on the shoulder (where the tread meets the sidewall)
The hole is too larg
The tire has internal damage from being driven flat
There are multiple punctures too close together
Steel belts or cords are exposed

Example:A screw in the sidewall cannot be safely repaired because the sidewall flexes too much while driving.

🤔What Does "Run Flat" Mean?

A run-flat tire is designed to support the vehicle's weight even after losing air pressure.

Instead of immediately pulling over, most run-flat tires allow you to drive:

About **50 miles after a complete loss of air
At speeds up to 50 mph

This gives you time to safely get to a repair shop.

🤔 Why Can't Most Run-Flat Tires Be Repaired?

When a run-flat tire is driven with little or no air:
The reinforced sidewalls do all the work
Internal damage may occur that cannot be seen from the outside
Manufacturers often recommend replacement after a loss-of-air event

Some run-flat tires may be repairable after a thorough inspection, but many are NOT

How Do I Know If I Have Run-Flat Tires?

Look for markings on the sidewall such as:

RFT (Run Flat Tire)
ROF(Run On Flat)
SSR (Self Supporting Runflat)
ZP (Zero Pressure)

Many luxury vehicles from companies like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Mini come equipped with run-flat tires from the factory.
Quick Rule of Thumb

🛞 Middle of the tread = maybe repairable.
🛞 Shoulder or sidewall = replace it.
🛞 Run-flat driven with no air = inspect carefully, often replacement is recommended.
