My latest custom order finished and on its way to the customer. This man requested a long fountain pen with an African blackwood barrel, copper cap and section with a hammered finish, and no clip. I lined the barrel and cap with ebonite, turned the barrel with the bottle shape, and tapered the cap, both according to the shapes he wanted. Actually hammering the copper would not have worked, so I gave it a cut texture. The overall length is just under 6”. Afterwards I made myself an Old Fashioned, maple syrup, Wild Turkey 101, and an orange slice. Had to celebrate!

Dragons! This fountain pen has a dark red body material made for me by Abigail Markov, a fellow penmaker. I carved the metal fittings from titanium. The creature is done in a tattoo art style. The mountains that for the cap band and the mountain peak for the cap top are shaped and heat colored to be harsh and rugged. The clip is a broken lance made from stainless damascus and bronze. I placed an 18k gold JOWO nib in it. This is available.

It’s September 11, and no, we have not forgotten! But for Nita and myself, it’s also a personal anniversary. On this date in 2011 we met. As you can see, she’s been playing with AI. Got them pretty close. My knife and pen designs are off a little, as is the lathe model, but it is a South Bend. And she has me with my CVO V-ROD. Hers is good, especially the quote on the drink tumbler. Prettiest smile in the world!

The Orlando International Pen Show is this weekend, and I want to point out a couple of friends you should check out. First, Jason Olson Write Turnz is a great penmaker. Jason will have several beautiful pens for sale, including this one in Fordite. Second, Abdiel Acosta Abdiel Acosta Art Abdiel is an artist, and he’ll have several examples of his work for sale. One of them is them pen he and I have made in collaboration. There is a lot to see at the show. These men are my favorites.

I’m back in business! The gearbox on my South Bend Heavy engine lathe finally bit the dust. It wouldn’t shift. So I found one, along with the direction control arm, on eBay. It’s been gone through with new bearings and seals. I’m about to make some pen parts.

This is one of my “Arachnophobia” folding models made 11 years ago. I had a billet of Tom Ferry mosaic damascus which I used for the blade. The liners and bolsters are titanium, with carving and texturing. The ring around the pivot is Mokuti. Handle scales are mosaic carbon fiber. I believe I used lightning strike carbon fiber for the back spacer. It’s hard to see in this picture, but inside the hole in the bolster is my maker’s mark. This is a flipper. Been awhile since I made a folder. Think I need to make one or two.

I’ve been interested in railroads since I was a little boy, and I like Art Deco. Combine the two and you have American passenger locomotives from the 1930s. The Pennsylvania Railroad built several, including this 4-4-4-4 T1 designed by Raymond Lowey. The pen’s body is ebonite, and the trim is darkened titanium. I tried to capture the shark nose smoke box and the screw that holds the clip is the headlight. The cap sleeve profiles the running boards and the cab. The pen has a long cap with a short barrel to resemble the proportions of the locomotive and tender. Its owner, Phillip Millman (Phillip), brought it to the DC pen show and Nita Broadwell took pictures.
